Chill out in Mechelen!

A very inviting and exciting area with many restaurants, bars and shops. You can take a boat along the canal, hire bikes and generally relax in a peaceful environment.

Mechelen has greatly improved over the last 10 years. The city has invested in underground parking lots in key places around town. The result is an attractive city with lots of historic buildings. The Grote Markt is surrounded by 16th century gild houses. The post office used to be the palace of Margareta from Austria. There are several cafe's with... More

The Grote Market is a lovely place to visit if in Mechelen. With a cobbled square, historic buildings and restaurants around the edge, this place is ideal to sit down, have a Stella and admire the architecture. There is also no traffic through the square - just bicycles which makes it nice and quiet. Well worth a visit if in... More

During this visit to Mechelen I took more time to look around the square and have changed my mind a bit about the "Grote Markt". There are some really nice, old & classified buildings, which deserve a closer look at them. One is certainly the "Town Hall". Also on the square, to the right of the town hall, there is... More

Everyone knows Bruges (Brugge) and Gand (Gent) for it old charm, Mechelen is less known. But what a nice surprise. Well maintained, a very nice atmosphere and many cafes and restaurants.

Surrounded by restaurants , with the cathedral nearby,. City Hall and tourist office here. Here during the very hot spell at themed of June 2015, the Brabostatue was attractive to kids wanting to cool down. Choose your restaurant depending on where there is some shade!

It is a must to see market and surrounding for every traveler to Brussels, whether you have time or not but you should be at this place. Lots of history behind this area. Its clean and easy access by train. I really enjoyed my time and would love to come back again with my love and friends.

We were there for the bicycle race so the square was full of tents etc.. The market which normally takes place on Saturdays was spread among the adjacent streets which was great. It's a great place to take a beer and people watch.

In my opinion, this square rivals the Grand Place of Brussels. It can even surpass it with its larger area. Both can be comparable in the subtle details of the buildings. Restaurants and cafes come in ample amounts and the whole atmosphere is charming. What comes as a definite extra over the Grand Place is the towering cathedral.

Comparable to other Belgian town squares, the surrounding architecture is impressive and beautiful. The open area is also much bigger than most other Belgian cities, and probably rivals or is bigger than Brussels's Grote Markt. This is wonderful for the city's festivals, but the restaurants don't particularly feel as cozy as in other cities' town centres. As Mechelen is a... More
