While in Antwerp, be sure to check out the Old Wooden Escalator to the tunnel that crosses under the Scheldt River. You'd never know this is the place to do this. People with bicycles, dogs, kids, strollers, etc., use this means to get to the other side easily. A fun discovery.

It was my first time crossing a river by walking under it. Pretty remarkable wooden elevators which look ancient but were in perfect condition. If you are on a bicycle, no sweat! There are lifts too that bring you down about 6 storeys. Then there's that 1 kilometre stretch that you have to walk / cycle across to reach the... More

It is quite a good walk to the other side of the river. Nothing much on the other side, but quite peaceful. Very popular tunnel with locals.

You go in through a simple building on the side of the river, down two sets of perfectly preserved wooden escalators and find yourself 31m down in a perfectly straight tunnel. Very quiet, a good shelter from the rain, but fascinating to see locals using this astounding place as a normal route, bringing dogs, bikes and even jogging. On the... More

Quite easy to find from Grand-Place, the station is an old art-deco style building that looks a bit like a fire station. Cool old escalators that take you down to the tunnel where it's about a 10 minute walk under the river to the other side. There's not much happening on the other bank other than a scenic view back... Old-fashioned tunnel stretching about 600 meteres underwater connecting two parts of the city. The stairway from mid-20th century is an atttraction in itself. Watch the bikers pass by and enjoy the scenario to a perfect picture inside the tunnel.

A really long tunnel, with some impressive old escalators. In summer it's quite nice, since it's colder in the tunnel than outside. Beware of people on bikes flashing by!

What an art deco gem! Beautiful stairs and well maintained. Just don't take a fall in the middle of the tunnel as you won't know which direction to take after getting back up!

It's easy to reach on food from the Cathedral and the Square. It's worth the 5 minute walk to see it...and also to see the very old wooden escalator that is still in use. It's not a "must see", but is worth it if you have the time.

If you're biking around Antwerp, this is a fun diversion. Get the elevator down from the little square bounded by Sint Jansvliet, Ernest van Dijckaai, and Zand (it took me awhile to realize that). The LED above the elevator tells you where it is, beginning at around -30M and coming up to 0. The elevator is huge and fits quite... More
