All visitors to Antwerp will see this from the outside as the first house built by a guild - the butchers (it's red and white striped brickwork was apparently deliberately created to mimic fat streaking though meat!). What's incredible is that this was built in 1520 - just think what was being built in England at that time, nothing on... More

If tyou like like classical music, this is a good place. Although it is relatively small, you can spend a couple of hours listening the music samples in the audioguide related to the items. The PDAs are a bit slow, and not all text is actually translated in english, and you might get a few crashes, so be patient with... More

So yes, the title of the Vleeshuis is a bit misleading - no longer anything having to do with butchers, this is now the best museum of musical instruments I've ever seen! Make sure to get the audio guide when you walk in! Listening to the many audio clips of the instruments you see in the display cases enriches the... More

Although it is still situated in the center of Antwerp, this museum doesn't attract the hordes of visitors like Rubenshuis. In the old butchers' hall you will find a fine collection of old musical instruments, in the basement there is an exposition of how church bells are made. They set up a workshop there, so you can follow the whole... More

The highlight of our trip to this city. Looks stunning from the outside & houses a fascinating collection of instruments through the ages. We were given a free audioguide with our tickets; it has text about the exhibits & you can listen or enjoy video as you tour the displays. We had well over 2 1/2 hours here & I'd... More

The museum was ok, but I think there are a lot better museums (like MAS and MOMU) in Antwerp. So if you come for a short visit this is certainly not a must.

Compact exhibition of all things musical pertaining to Flanders, displayed over two floors. Disappointingly, the 'audio guide' didn't have that much audio content - at least the English language version didn't! However, the English language visual explanations were very adequate. You won't need much more than an hour here, but still a worthwhile diversion. Visit if you're exploring the 'old... More

We visited the "Sound of the City" exhibition at the Vleeshuis (so-called because the brickwork is reminiscent of streaky bacon). On the main (ground) floor, there is a historical collection of instruments, all related to Flanders in some way. In the basement, bell and instrument manufacture is covered. On a more practical note, the toilets downstairs are well maintained. There... More
