A gorgeous garden in the center of Leiden. Many old trees and pretty plants. A lot of history to discover here. I live around the corner but dont come often enough to enjoy the different seasons.

We have found gardens to be interesting and wonderful when touring European countries but this one is educational too. The various types and familys of plants are grouped to the left upon entry so one can see interrelated plants. Often the country of origin is also listed. I saw plants here that I have never seen before. Go on a... More

The Hortus Botanicus is a beautifully calm and restful place to while away a couple of hours. The hot house plants are fascinating, especially the gigantic banana trees and the water lilies. The gardens are attractive but not manicured which makes it seem far more like a working garden than I tourist trap. The setting alongside the canal is lovely... More

The oldest Botanical gardens in NL. Rich history and well structured exhibits. I especially enjoyed walking through the categorized species garden. Also check out the Apiary.

A botanical garden of similar size to the Cambridge University Botanical Garden in the UK. It was a pleasant walk along the canals to the entrance. The cost was 7 Euros per person which is very reasonable when you consider the size and scope of the garden along with the amount and variety of plants, shrubs and trees. It was... More

This is one of the oldest botanical garden of Europe, from where the "tulipmania" started in the 17th century. The squared recint of the original herbal and experimental garden is to be seen at the very front, from above the fence if you do not wish to pay, after entering through the old Academy. A big glasshouse houses the winter... More

This botanical garden, one of the oldest in Europe, offers much to both novice and the specialists. Their green houses were filled with rare tropical plants (especially orchids), and their scheme garden based on Linnaean nomenclature also visualises the systematic classification in a way easy to be digested. The ticket (7 euros for adult) is well worth it, as one... More

Leiden is a beautiful city, and well worth a visit. The Hortus Botanicus Garden is not to be missed if you have any interest in horticulture and history. It is part of the University of Leiden, and the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands. A lovely and fascinating place to visit.
