We rarely visit Leiden without going into the Hortus. Founded more than 400 years ago, the gardens contain a wide variety of the world's plants, shrubs, and trees, very effectively displayed. The greenhouses also reward a visit. All in all, this is a very relaxing space to wander through and occasionally sit down. Highly recommended.

Visited today with my partner with a groupon voucher, 2 entrances for the price of 1 - still very reasonably priced at 7 euro per adult full price. We started with the indoors carnivorous plants and some very well kept fossils. The gardens are very well maintained and appointed, with 200 years old trees, small ponds with waterlillys, rose gardens... More

Nice historical botanic garden with interesting green house including the Victoria Regina (tropical water lilly) on the top floor, flowering in February. Access to Observatorium museum and a lovely restaurant with healthy choices! Recommended as a resting moment as it is just in the middle of the histroical sites, on the famous Rapenburg Canal, next to the old University building... More

Small but nice garden to visit, close to home, affordable. Near the canals of Leiden. Rare plants to see

This is one of the loveliest places to sit and have a drink in Leiden, especially in Spring. Flowers and plants all around you and the birds that make you forget that you're not in a forest but in a city. Every now and then, you see a university professor discussing some topic with his/her student (the café is close... More

One of the oldest botanic gardens in the world with a very diverse collection of plants from all over the world. It´s also a very nice place to relax during the sunny days.

We were very disappointed in this garden. Many of the beds were full of weeds and much of the grounds looked as though no-one had been near them for years. There were small areas that were presentable. There are some very old and beautiful trees. Certainly not worth the 7 euros each. Perhaps there is a shortage of staff and... More

The botanical gardens were founded by the university of Leiden in 1590, which make them the oldest of Western Europe (the orto botanico of the university of Padova in Italy is the oldest one in Europe). I visited already quite some botanical gardens throughout Europe and I must say I really liked this one: not too big, beautifully located alongside... More

Kew without the crowds. Leiden has the best park and ride we have ever come across. Minibuses will take you from the Haagweg car park to wherever you want to go AND you can ring and tell them where you are and they will bring you back. So not cheap

April not the best time to visit this garden however a very nicely laid out garden with a number of glass houses. Managed to see inside one of the telescope towers which was interesting. A pleasant way to spend and hour or two away from the city.
