Small fishing and vacation village on the shores of Europe's largest lake. Very scenic and interesting, no less so as one needs take a ferry to get there. Try and go outside of the main tourist seasons though as likely to get very packed.

This is a very interesting trip from Amsterdam----- figure on staying all day if possible ----- the first time I visited was about 50 years ago ---- at that time the houses were old historic homes and shops --- were all very well maintained and painted mostly in pastel shades.------- still have mementos of that first time. Expect the Isselmeer... More

Nice pitoresque small town to spend the day in. It is quite close to Amsterdam (30 min bus drive). Bus leaves you in the center and you can quickly come to marina and enjoy the meal or a cofee on a terrasse. Interesting architecture. From there you can visit the Island of Marken (the boat leaves from Marina), and from... More

This little town just about 30 minutes away from Amsterdam, is very picturesque with a lot of small shops and restaurants in the water front. It is also the jump off point for the ferry to Marken during the summer months. As this is one of the more popular tourist destination, expect that the prices are going to be a... More

If you are in Amsterdam and you have a day to spare then Volendam and Marken is definitely worth a visit. Volendam is a beautiful lakeside village with some nice cafe's and pubs. Its also a good place for shopping, souvenirs:-magnets, windmill, shoes etc. There is also a authorised cuckoo clock retailer. You can buy clocks cheaper than in Germany... More

A beautiful fishing village, in the country side along the coast! It is worth the visit, we were there on the 1st of January a great way to start the year with its Christmasy atmosphere and the decoration, many restaurants and bars with good food.

Volendam is second on the country-side tour. One gets to know how cheese is prepared and how many varieties of cheese are available on the Volendam Cheese factory. We can purchase cheese here and is one of the best qualities. During summer, one gets to visit Marken from Volendam through water - boats. In winter, however, buses take us to... More

A very inviting neighbourhood of the scenic Dutch countryside of farms, wetlands, windmills and cheese....:) Covered well with a local tour guide....options of full day and half day tours...full day tour does more justice as it provides enough time to get a real feel of the local life, the misty winds, lake cruise and pretty decorated cottages. Visit to cheese... More

Do yourself a favour and take a 30 minute bus from Centraal Station to the charming town of Volendam. The harbour front is bursting with great restaurants, bars and tourist shops. It's a great day (or half day) out to see a bit more of the countryside and to experience another town.
