If you have been to Europe you will know that beautiful historic churches are not in short supply however I found The Cathedral of Sint Bavo (or The Grote Kerk or St.-Bavokerk) was just lovely, amazing and different! Go on a market day and it's just wonderful before and after entering the church! First of all there is a small... More

The cathedral is very well kept up with beautiful stain glass windows, massive organ and spectacular ceilings. It only cost 2.5 euro to enter.

Make sure to follow Rick Steves Guidebook to see all the little fun facts about this church. There are marks on one of the columns that show the tallest and shortest people ever to be in Haarlem (the tallest one is over 8 feet tall!). There also is a description about how the "stinking" rich came about as well as... More

The place is superb! The concerts at this Church are so magnificent that one really 'fly away'. Stayed in Amsterdam (Ibis Airport - another excelent choice).

We arrived on a Saturday morning from the buzz of the street market in the shadow of the church. The church's quiet majesty was complimented by a free recital being given by a string trio in a side chapel. It was a beautiful experience. There was also excellent coffee and waffles being sold in another area of the church. Great.

I had planned to take in one of the weekly organ concerts here, and what with one thing or another, we didn't make it to Haarlem from Amsterdam on the right night (I think it's Tuesdays at 8:15pm). I was, however, pleasantly surprised to have the organ going full-tilt when I arrived the next day during the early afternoon. The... More

This is a surprisingly beautiful church. It has a long and interesting history. There is a charge of €2.50 to enter, which supports the conservation of the church. Admission included a useful and informative brochure. We had the good luck to be visiting while a noon hour organ recital was being performed - it was a pleasure to have the... More

This huge church is the largest in the Netherlands. In the center of lovely Haarlem, as charming as it gets. See Frans Hals's tomb, beautiful organ, bare church after the iconoclasts had done their work.

You can get enough info about the church. It's a very old church, you can see that on the graves on the floor. In the summer they do church services and concerts. And they have a cute store. The entance cost 3€, which I think is pricey for a church.

This cathedral is a beautiful piece of history along with being a gorgeous piece of architecture in the most historic part of town. Take time to look around as well as to go listen to an organ concert. The docents are wonderful and will gladly share with you their knowledge of the old church and its history.
