Description: The St. Nicolaas Boat Club of Amsterdam is a non-profit organization...
The St. Nicolaas Boat Club of Amsterdam is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of historic boats on the Amsterdam canals.Founded in 1997, the stichting (non-profit club) has given boat rides to thousands of people. This is a unique opportunity to see Amsterdam from the perspective of a historic open-air tuindersvlet. These boats were traditionally used to carry agricultural products to markets. They were also used as general barges to shuttle materials around cities.Tuindersvletten are not glamorous boats, but they are perfect for the canals. These are the iron boats on which the city was built. They are characterized by their low sides and flat bottom. They are great for carrying vegetables, cows, bricks, and now... people.

Unfortunately, the large commercial boat tour operators put this small tour boat out of business. This was on a small open boat which could hold around10 or 15 people. Because of its size, it could travel on the smaller, narrower canals. It was a very personalized canal tour and entertaining. There was no fee, just a donation. We have toured... More

This canal boat tour is no longer in operation. The open-boat canal tour has been taken over by the folks at Boom Chicago. See the reviews of Boom Chicago for more information.

Well apparently they did loose the legal battle and do have to run the boats as a business now. It's 15 euro, you get a ticket and the boat is a lot bigger. The tour was still better than your standard canal tour though, not fabulous like it looks it used to be. No taped commentary or standard text read... More

I took this trip in August 2011 and it was such a wonderful experience!! Today I recommended the tour to a friend, who is going to Amsterdam this week. And by checking the homepage I discovered that they are no longer allowed to offer their tours... :( Such a shame!!!! Irreally hope that they will succeed to re-open this service.... More

I guess I'll submit this as a post-mortem. In memoriam for the St. Nicolaas Boat Club. Keep fighting, guys! Your tour was hands-down the best thing I did in Amsterdam. I'm so sorry to hear that people won't be able to benefit from your knowledge and service. It was one of the best tours I've ever had and have fond... More

I visited Amsterdam in April. I tracked down Saint Nicholas to a bike shop who informed that they had to shut down due to some issues with the government. I was so disappointed :-( Returning home, I found this on their website: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188590-d1319323-Reviews-Eetcafe_Singel_404-Amsterdam_Noord_Holland.html I am not sure how people can still be reviewing them. I hope they can operate again.... More

This was by far the best thing we did in Amsterdam, and quite possibly on our entire European tour! A bottle of wine, some nice cheese, and uber-informative tour guide on a beautiful sunny day made this boat ride an unforgettable experience! A cause I was more than happy to donate to! - Neil R

LOVED this. After wanting to do a canal boat tour...and NOT wanting to be enclosed with a buncha tourists, I discovered this cool option! The folks that drive you about are volunteers that just love to show off their city in a GREAT old, open boat! Just loved it. Bring a picnic or bevvies or whatever you choose and enjoy... More

The tour was fun, focusing on some unusual aspect of amsterdam, but mostly outside the center. We even had to bend down under the lowest bridge of amsterdam, wich was really fun. But I did not like the fact that they say the tour is free when it is not. Our host spent the first and the last 15min explaining... More
