The helmsman said he'd go out if we had at least four passangers,we'll with the only day of rain in our weeks vacation...and another couple..off we went to find where the boat,an antique of sorts but very well maintained,was moored and were soon off on a wet but wonderful canal ride ,up close and personal with Amsterdam. My wife and I took this boat trip with the advice of fellow tripadvisors and we were very satisfied. It is more intimate and fun than the big tour boat companies. We took this ride of the canals with 6 other tourists and it was the way to go. Slow and relaxing with great food ( that we took along) and met some great people. It was a little hard to find the sign up book. I've attached pictures so you can see what you are looking for. Find ChicagoBoom and the book is under the stairs. You sign up for a tour time - there is no set schedule as the captains are all volunteers so you are on their schedule! You meet 15... more

Great trip - the three of us and the guide. Everyone else who'd signed up at Boom Chicago wimped out due to dicey weather, so if it looks like rain get over there and try to get included on a tour at the last minute. So relaxed and the best viewpoint for so much of the city. more

If you are in Amsterdam, do try to book a boat ride with St Nicolaas at Boom Chicago, preferably in advance, because they can be fully booked for up to 2 days. Fantastic experience - got to see so many parts of Amsterdam I wouldn't otherwise have had the time to see. Really nice host - recommended 10 euro or more donation per person and we were more then happy to pay that, to help keep this voluntary organisation going. We had an hour and 20 minute tour with Neil. He was great being a tour guide of Amsterdam in a past life - took us places the big tour boats can't. Well worth the recommendation. Relies on tips to keep the boats in the water. more

Read loads of positive reviews about the St. Nicolaas Boat Club on TA before I decided to sign up for it at Boom Chicago at the Leidseplein. It wasn't the usual touristy kind of cruise that you'll expect from a tourist operator - but rather a boat owned by the club itself that takes you along the canals of Amsterdam.... more

Highly recommended. Book up at Boom Chicago beforehand. Take along drink/food/smokes and have a laugh. Great fun. more
