Nieuwmarkt is a really nice square to just hang out when its warm on a bench, or to sit in a café or bar and just enjoy a beer or coffee. During the day you can find a small market there with vegetables and fresh juice.

Voted "best square in the city" by the Amsterdam Community since a couple of years. Only disadvantage of that it that it is becoming toooo popular and crowded sometimes. It could do with a few less blowshops and more high quality horeca (hotel-restaurant-cafe) establishments

This is a pretty square with a notably large chinese supermarket. It has noticeably fewer tourists than most other squares and is lined with many oriental shops The atmosphere is genuine and wonderful - and not crowded when I visited (multiple times thoughout a week in mid-August) It is along the border of the Red light district and chinatown. The Nieuwmarkt is a square with many pubs, restaurants and street cafe's, much appreciated by the Amsterdam people themselves. Nice, lively atmosphere.

I lived right off this square for three years, and I spent so many lovely afternoon's sitting outside, eating bitterballen and having a drink. When it's sunny out, this place attracts a nice local crowd, and during the festival period (Queen's Day and the music festival in August) there are live music concerts. It's also lovely during Christmas time, as... More

We stopped here for 'Genuine Dutch ice-cream' at a little shop next to the square, which contains the market. We were there on a Saturday afternoon. I don't know what stalls, if any, are there on other days. Even though it was drizzling with rain, it was a nice spot to sit near the canal and people watch. We also... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
