One of Amsterdam's special canals

Another one of Amsterdam's beautiful canals - see it on foot, on bike, or by boat. And make sure to find a cafe, sit on the terrace, and watch the world go by.

This is one of the most beautiful canals by day and especially by night. It is lined with a variety of architecturally interested buildings and comparing the differences between the roof gables is fascinating.

Walking along the Herengracht Canal is a waterman and old house lover's delight, especially on an early August Sunday morning when one is nearly alone with the atmosphere.

The Herengracht Canal and the Streets along side is the most beautiful of all the Canals in Amsterdam, and also the most expensive, residentially. Homes beautifully maintained and a feast for the eyes. Wish we could have seen it lit up at night, but sunset wasn't until 9:50 pm during our August visit and we were too tired from our... More

So my husband and I did the lovers canal cruise that sails along Prisengracht, Brouwergracht and Herengracht. All canals are picturesque and a sunset cruise is a fantastic idea. Herengracht canal is the most chique of all three, but we loved the 1 hour cruise tremendously and would do it again.

Typical Amsterdam canal, good selection of architecture, best seen from boat, bridge or road, I would recommend all 3.

Go for a stroll, stop and have a coffee and watch the locals ride by on their bikes. The houses were built in the 17th century and it is interesting to spot those that have developed a bit of a lean to one side. On another day get a boat trip and see the houses from the water and listen... More

After visiting Venice, these canals are not really anything special. They are main waterways for people and freight to move about. The canal tours cruise up and down but the boats move so slow that is really much slower to take a boat than walk or hop on the bus.

I find it one of the most beautiful canals in amsterdam, the architecture of the residential houses and the bridges makes it a wonder. Best experienced with a boat!
