Walked from close to the Palace to Amstel River along the scenic Herengracht. Beautiful mature trees, great views of some of the best old houses in town, lots of activity on the canal, few shops. Very dangerous traffic conditions for newly-arrived tourists: bicycles and trams sneaking up on you from all directions, cyclists not always stopping for red traffic lights,... More

One of many beautiful canals around Amsterdam. I highly recommend taking a boat trip, or hiring a pedal boat like we did, or even a powered boat, and exploring all the canals for half a day. It's a lovely place, and there are lots of quirky floating houses in many places that you can only appreciate from the water.

Our hotel, The Ambassade Hotel, was located on this canal and it is fabulous! With so many bicycles flying by and so many interesting things to look at, this canal is sure to please any visitor. The shops, cafes, boaters, bikers, flowers all make this canal one of the most beautiful.

My boyfriend and I rented an apartment here during July 2014. Just looking out the windows made you smile. It really was one of the prettiest streets I have ever seen! Plenty of bar and restaurants to cater fr all budgets, and lots of cute little boutique shops. Perfect!

We stayed at a hotel in this area, and we loved it. The old buildings that tower over the canals are amazing and so well kept. You feel the rich history of the area. When going to Amsterdam, a walk here is a must. Many small cafes, restaurants and shops to visit and prices are for the most part very... More

Herengracht is the first of the three major canals in the city centre of Amsterdam. The canal is named after the heren regeerders who governed the city in the 16th and 17th century.

A nice quiet part of Amsterdam which is a pleasure to just chill out away from the crowds in the town center. A few small shops that have been there for years and when you look in their windows you wonder why they have managed to stay viable. Well worth a visit though.

This canal is lined with beautiful houses. However the best way to look at them is from the water, so take a canaltour. They are the prettiest in the evening, when the houses are lighted and you can see also the beautiful interior through the large open windows! A sight to behold!!!
