My wife, 8 and 13 year old daughters, and myself rented some bikes form MacBikes in the city and decided to bike the Amstel down to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. Once you get on to Amsteldijk the normal city bike traffic becomes little to none and much more safer for a family not so experienced with Amsterdam bikers. The river... More

Its an interesting walk along the river should that be your thing, it passed the time for us while we waited on the bus to pick us up. Beware of cyclist, the will run you over should you accidentilly step onto a cycle path!

Follow the Amstel all the way to Nes and have a cup of awrhong nice - then cross the river by shuttle ferry and find your way back into Amsterdam. I guarantee you a great 4-6 hours of pleasantness, lovely views and - if it rains - a wet suit;)

We talk a guided bike ride which took us 10km down the Amstel, so relaxing, many things to see on the way, and a very nice windmill

A great way to see Amsterdam is on a boat. The Amstel leads to all the major canals and into the smaller waterways. Changes your perspective of the city for the better

To walk along in the summer. Some highlights (see above) are to visit there. Love this part of Amsterdam!

The Amstel River looks like a wide canal. There is a bridge that crosses it near the Music Theater. This is worth seeing.

Spring coming into summer makes walks along the edge amazing. Was also here in November 2011 and The Autumny feel was also cool. Seasons definitely come alive near Rivers

Many visitors think it is a big canal but this is a river which gave the name to the city of Amsterdam.

One of the iconic views of Amsterdam - standing on one of the bridges over the Amstel in the old town looking at the others. Best enjoyed on a clear day near sunset.
