Wide river lined with interesting buildings, restaurants and bars, best experienced from a boat trip. Not as picturesque as the narrower canals but nevertheless important as it gave the city its name!

Amstel canals are proper to navigate with an hydrocylce. You should know that there is a rule when navigate on Amstel canals, always stay on right side of Amstel canal and try to avoid as much as possible big tourist boats. Enjoy the ride!

The main river of Amsterdam does not differ much from the rest of the smaller canals. It is wider, naturally, but somehow it lacks the special charm those smaller canals have. If you have to choose between cruises on the Amstel or the smaller canals - go for the canals.

We didn't take the boat cruise but did it by walking instead. Beautiful canals that give you the sense of the city. Have coffee at one of the brown bars with a view. Or a hotel brasserie on the canal. Any time you go, talk a walk to get the feel for the place. Wonderful.

"De Amstel", you think only Magere brug, Hermitage, Carre, Stopera etc. They are all in the city. When you have more time to take a bike and just cycleling a long the river bank to Oude kerk, you will see that amstel has more to enjoy. There is a lot of beautiful building a long the river bank. The river that gives Amsterdam its name. Slowly comes into the city from the southeast, many beautiful places and views. Best enjoyed on a boat, either a tour boat your own dinghy.

We were advised to walk along the Amstel to really get a "feel" for Amsterdam, and we really felt connected to the city after spending a couple of hours doing this.

When you walk from the Central Station to the Zeedijk, the Nieuwmarkt and then to the Waterloo market, you will stumble upon the wonderful canal the Amstel. It's perfect to stroll, watch the many bridges and make pictures. And lots of nice restaurant and cafes to take a break.

The Amstel is one attraction that you will want to experience when you arrive in Amsterdam and it is easy to find!!! Heading south out from Centraal Station, go along Damrak (towards Dam Square) and straight on through Rokin (you'll head pass Madame Tussauds Museum) - it's about a half hour walk in total. If you head south on one... More
