A large zoo that is definitely worth a visit due to its huge aquarium and large array of wildlife. The problem I have with the zoo is with its inconsistency in regards to the care of its wildlife. Some enclosures were very well put together and seemed to satisfy all the needs of the animal(s) in question. However many of... More

Loved the zoo so much. Our zoo at home doesn't offer much, so to be able to see things like elephants, giraffes and wolves in real life was unbelievable. Loved every second, the only thing is it some of the enclosures are rather small, so was a little sad to see. Great day out for animal lovers

The Amsterdam Artis Zoo is definitely not the biggest zoo you'll visit. But despite it's size it has a wide range of animals in quite good conditions. Also the fact this zoo is in the centre of Amsterdam is a huge benefit. Drinks and food can be a bit expensive, but reasonable.

Very small space to move around for certain animals like elephants. But apart from that there was a really good variety of interesting and beautiful animals. The reptile room was cool especially. Easily accesible by tram. Good neighbourhood

Great zoo. Arrived there in a canal boat. Plenty of attractions in side. Loved the butterfly house- felt I was in an animation..

We took the kids here in july when we visited . Lots of animals to see and feeling of being away from the bustle of the city was nice for couple of hours. The highlight was the gigantic alligator biggest ive ever seen could easily spend a full day here with the kids restuarants throughout the zoo too. worth a... More

Zoo was super cute. I have a fascination with zoo's and seeing animals so me and my boyfriend try to visit one wherever we go! Tonnes of animals and you get great views of them. Only thing is that I was disappointed I didn't get to see the sloth, but that can't be helped!

Lovely zoo, a lot of it was closed off when we went due to maintenance work (which is totally understandable and obviously needed) however it would have been nice to have been informed before this. The animals are well looked after the butterfly house is fantastic as is the aquarium. A nice respite from the city.

Visited on a miserable, rainy day but still had a lovely visit, especially considering there are quite a few buildings to go inside with animals and other creatures living in them, the aquarium was great! I loved the butterfly enclosure as well. There are a lot of different animals to look at and they all look very well looked after.... More

Lovely day out, and for €20 pp, not badly priced. Lots of animals to see up close and personaly. There are buildings dotted about one of them has an aquarium inside, it's amazing, so many different fish and the building its self is beautiful. Well worth a visit.

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighborhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
