We visited the zoo as it was free as part of our I Amsterdam cards. The zoo seemed to be part of a large garden complex, which provided lots of shade for visitors. The animals seemed well cared for, and photo opportunities were very good. Lots of places to eat, drink. Kids playgrounds etc. easily accessible via trams.

We loved this attraction. Lots to see and well laid out. We spent hours here and took lots of pictures. When I return to Amsterdam I would love to go here again. Great day out young or old.

First the bit that's worrying. Some of the enclosures are a bit like the old London zoo with enclosures that are not big enough for the animals in them. Lions, some aquarium exhibits and the penguin enclosure is a disgrace. On the other hand the butterfly area is very good but generally the number of animals should be halved and... More

Artis, short for Natura Artis Magistra (Latin for "Nature is the teacher of art and science"), is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and one of the oldest zoos of mainland Europe. This may be a claim to fame, but it could also be their downfall. Although a number of sections have been renovated, i could not help but feeling... More

My partner and I love going to the zoo and have been to loads, however this is easily one of the best we have visited. The zoo itself is huge and the range of animals is incredible. The best bits were easily the free roaming sections, such as the Forest House and Lemur Island. The animals are really tame and... More

I loved this zoo. The animals seem to have more space than in some of the other zoos I have been too. It feels more wild though probably not for the animals. The big cats could use more room and the elephants seemed miserable. Still better than most. Makes for a great day!

As a student i got a discount for Artis. Therefore i went there every month. It's not the prettiest zoo in the world, but it's old and the animals are alive and kicking. It was a meaningfull place during the war. Visit Artis, bring you're own food (or have a pancake with the flamingo's) and just read about the history... More

Don't think about it just go! This is worth every penny/cent. Regardless of what your opinions are about zoos this is well worth a visit as you get a lot for your money, you could spend nearly a whole day there. Plenty to see & do!

I have been to A LOT of zoos but this one is definitely worth mentioning. It's a really relaxing walk through with very clean, well-designed enclosures. You can see how much effort they've put in! There is also a small gift shop and several kiosks where you can buy food.

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighborhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
