I had never thought such a concept would exist: a zoo and a botanical garden combined. Yet, Artis Royal Zoo has been around since 1838. Clearly, Holland was ahead of its times.

The zoo was very interesting and a lot of fun, many of the different buildings allow animals to run around you. The chimpanzee enclosure was pretty depressing however, and there should definitely be more security in some parts as many people thumped on the glasses. However as an overall experience, it was very enjoyable.

Amazing how a zoo in the middle of one of the biggest cities of Europe, can be so big and calm. A nice time away from the business and with a great range of animals.

Historical zoo, with many historical buildings. Ideal to end a citytrip to Amsterdam with children. ecause of Easter there was a quiz route for children on the theme of "eggs", a bit difficult but it gives focus to a visit. The cage with the Amour panther is indeed rater small, but works are in progress to enlarge it. The "Two... More

I liked Blijdorp zoo in Rotterdam better. I think it's an average zoo and if you are in Amsterdam, there are many places which are more impressive.

We visited Artis on a sunny Saturday in mid-April when the zoo was full of families enjoying a day out. It was busy, but didn't feel crowded - just a short queue to get in and very little queuing at any of the facilities. We ended up sending four hours there - more than we expected - the zoo is... Visited the zoo and found it very interesting and nicely designed. It cost ?20 each but worth it especially if you have children. There is lots to see but unfortunately on ou visit they were construction works goin on for the big cat enclosure - it will be a better environment for them! Enjoy just wondering around and seeing all... More

Some of it was fantastic. There's sections where you can walk and see animals - lemurs, bats, butterflies - with no barrier between you. This is amazing. However, there are other enclosures where you get the sense that too many animals are crammed into too little space. Specifically, the lions and camels were two I felt this way about. Seeing... More

I'm not a fan of zoos anyway but against my better judgement we went for a visit just because our hotel was right across the road from it. I really wish we hadn't of bothered, not just because of the 40 euro (for two, entrance fee) but because of the lack of space the animals have. There is several exotic... More
