We liked the zoo, particularly the elephants. There's lots to see and it's best to take your time and make sure you get around to see it all. One disappointment was the service in cafe near the entrance. The staff were a bit grumpy and we had to wait around 20mins for our sandwiches to me made. It's nice that... More

A lovely little zoo. Not too big but not tiny either. Great for a day out, loads to see and really nice to walk around. Nice little places to sit and have a rest or a picnic. We had a lovely day out. It's easy to get to on Tram 9 from Centraal as well.

Nice, good sized zoo with many animals. We especially enjoyed the the butterfly-house. First time we heard wolves howl!

Spent the whole day here, so much to see and do. The kids and adults will be hard pushed to find a better way to spend a day. It helped that the sun shone throughout. Great picnic areas, seating by the water, top photo opportunities. If you go to Amsterdam don't miss a trip to this Oasis in the city.

This is a nice zoo if you visit Amsterdam. They have a huge aquarium division. For those how live in Amsterdam a year card is to advise.

This zoo was so good last year we went again this year, it's enclosures are so close for viewing yet at a safe distance, it's great to see the animals happy in their enclosures. The zoo is not too big and not too small, we went on a Saturday so they were open til sunset which made the zoo a... More

I came here in 2013 and spent all day wandering around and had a great time so I was more than happy to come back with a different group of friends. Was a lovely day, we walked around at our own leisure there is plenty to do and see... Loved the seal show, I watched them feeding the bugs and... More

Very nice zoo with a wide array of animals, the animal enclosures are very good and give the animals lots to do. Price was very reasonable, I suggest pre paying for tickets from the tour operators in the city or off the tour buses as these tickets are cheaper than on the gate and also allow you to not have... We visited here on a weekday and it was very busy so wouldn't go on a weekend! Lots of animals to see, many more exotic animals then in UK zoo but some of the elosures were just too small. All the enclosures were very well done but just not enough space in some of them for the animals to run... More

The zoo is a very nice one. Not the best one I visited though. The animals are well kept in a nice ambiance very similar to their natural one. The lions though need more space, their area is claustrophobic. Very friendly staff and Dutch efficiency everywhere. Liked it.

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighborhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
