Went with my boyfriend on our first trip to Amsterdam. It wasn't anywhere near as Rotterdam zoo but its still a great place, a variety of animals and a cafe there that sells pretty nice snacks too! Tickets were good value for money and I'd definitely go again!

We visited on the 11th February and on first impressions it looks rather small but don't let that fool you. Whilst we was there a lot of construction work was in progress but that didn't stop us from enjoying our visit. The zoo is very well laid out and clean. The animals look happy enough. I must say it's the... More

It is the oldest zoo in Netherlands, I spent a full day in the zoo, it is huge and there is a whole a bunch of animals, I loved the place and once I have kids I will take them there.

We really enjoyed the zoo. At first we thought it seemed pretty small but it took us a few hours to get round everything. There was a lot of construction taking place and therefore a couple of animals were missing (which we were not warned about before we bought tickets or entered) but overall I still really enjoyed it. One... More

As soon as we entered the zoo we noticed how much maintenance was going on, with over half the animals not on display due to their enclosures being renovated. In my opinion the Zoo should be closed at this time of year if they want to close off half the zoo to do refurbishments as it was a waste of... More

We had a good time at the zoo. It's pretty big and it's nice to see that some of the animals aren't caged like in America. Rather, they have motes around their 'enclosures' and it feels more wild, I guess you could say. The butterfly house was the biggest, coolest and most exhilarating one of its kind that I have... This is my opinion, i come from a very small island so this zoo was fascinating for me! I loved every second of it! So many animals took us 3 hours to see them all, very very clean place! And allows you to take photos! Would recommand for family and couple trips

Artas is an old zoo but constantly improving and redecorating. Fun for children and adults alike. The aquarium is worth a separate visit.

It is the oldest Zoo of The |Netherlands and very nice for childeren and also for grown ups. In the summer the Zoo is also available to visit in the evening.

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighborhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
