We have been to the Noordermarkt, right outside of the Noorderkerk, many times. This year was the first time the church was open. There was a church group selling coffee inside. We took the opportunity to visit the church. It is very sparsely furnished, painted all in white. We were glad we were able to finally to see the interior... More

The Noorderkerk (North Church) is a wonderful example of the Dutch architecture of churches from the seventeen century. It was built in 1623 by the architect Hendrick Keyser, to be a Protestant church. AS such, it has for instance clean walls, since Protestant churches don't have images as the Roman Catholic churches have. The building has as its centre a... More

Great building but one only sees if from outside. The last of Keyser's buildings it is in stark contrast to the westerkerk down the canal. Saturday and monday mornings are bustling with market. Go then and enjoy the exterior of the church.

The square in front of the Noorderkerk is transformed into a bustling farmer's market on Saturday. Many of the stands sell organic produce. Of special note are the breads and cheeses. Also, look for the stand that sells only mushrooms. It has a great selection of some very exotic mushrooms and they sell a mixture that works great in salads... More

If you have seen the Anne Frank huis, continue on the Prinsengracht to the heart of the Jordaan. Around the church is a market on Saturday with biological food and "antiques". The Church itself dates back to 1621 and is a fine example of "Protestantism in stone": simple but magnificent.

In the Jordaan, the originally 17th century labourers district, but fvery trendy now. On the noordermarkt with the weekly farmers market and Lapjesmarkt. In the middle between the Westerstraat and the Lindengracht. Together about 50 restaurants within less than 10 mins walking distance. The curch is abeautifull example of Dutch Protestant Churches from the 17th century, and actually the first... More

This was the most amazing organic market I have ever visited! The choice of different breads, cheeses, mushrooms (!) and all sorts of vegetarian goodies was amazing! I wish I could transport this market to Antwerp once every so often ;-)

Staying in Jordaan

Neighborhood Profile
Jordaan
One of Amsterdam’s most preferred outdoor markets and some of the city’s favorite watering holes are but two of the many reasons to save ample time for a stroll through this especially convivial warren of narrow streets with its unfair share of quirky shops and quality galleries. Historically a haven for the working class and emigrants, these days the Jordaan is better known as an enclave for artists and designers. As popular as the Jordaan is as a destination for locals and out-of-towners alike, the area never feels particularly touristy or overrun with outsiders. A highlight even for long-time Jordaan residents, be sure to accept any invitation to step within one of the area’s beloved courtyards or to have a sneak peek inside one of its many working studios.
