Engaging exhibits, very involving; in beautiful & aesthetically restored building. Great restaurant too. Highly recommended - our kids loved it & we felt the use of audiovisual displays & exhibits really brought the whole experience to life. If only all museums could be like this.

My wife and I visited here last month and had a great time! The setup is good even if you are not a hugh history buff... and the rebuilt East Indiamen is worth the visit even if you skip the rest. Visit their webpage for advice on free parking near by... I didn't and almost got stuck with 40 euos... More

Due to lack of time we only saw three things, the replica of the three masted “Amsterdam”, a large vessel of the Dutch East India Company, which in its maiden journey to Batavia sank in a storm in the English Channel in winter of 1749, a multi-media trip from the perspective of a container arriving at Amsterdam harbour, and the... enjoyed seeing the early maps and the life-like ship The Amsterdam. Didn't see the film due to motion sickness.

I could have spent ages in this museum which is located very close to the central station and contains a wonderful collection of maritime history, models, aretfacts and paintings depicting the dutch history.

I learned more about the building from another tour than I did at the museum. A lot of the exhibits are geared to a younger audience. The museum is divided into 3 separate wings, with a ticket scanner posted at each entrance. A lot of the exhibit areas were very warm as well. The only saving grace in my opinion... More

I would list this Museum as an absolute must see in Amsterdam. The facility gives a very thorough and cohesive insight into Amsterdam's history as a port city that let's you understand just how important the sea has been to the city's development. The museum has fine displays of model ships, navigation instruments, maritime art and preserved ships.

I was very much looking forward to visiting the Scheepvaart museum again after it's two years of being closed to facilitate the renovations and modernisation. Unfortunately the museum has lost all of it's charm after the modernisation and I was missing a lot of the boats they used to have on display such as the kings barch. The shop is... More

The museum is located in a stunning piece of naval architecture, which now has a trendy glazed atrium rather like the British Museum in London and many others! There are many interactive exhibits; the recreation of a journey by ship through the ages was fun but historically pointless, probably aimed more at entertaining children than teaching very much. I enjoyed... More

There is so much to see! It took us 4 hours to cover all sections of the museum! Would go there again, cause I am sure we missed some things. Do not miss the Amsterdam VOC vessel!!!Lovely restaurant and shop.
