We really enjoyed this museum, which gives an interesting insight into the development of Amsterdam into the world city it became. It is amazing it came into being at all, and the development of the city is well explained via various multi-media and innovative approaches. Great! Entrance cost covered by the museumkaart which costs 50 euros. If you visit the... More

The place is more like a computer-run and movie-filled history of the city, made less dull than it really was. My feeling was that it tries to make Amsterdam "cooler" than it really was too. Only a handful of the items presented are museum-grade, and the vast majority of paintings, representing rich families, are substandard quality when it comes to... More

Amsterdam has a thousand-year history, so resolve to spend the day in this excellent, multi-storied museum. Wear comfortable shoes; rent the audio tour. Featured is a "DNA" exhibit. Hold your code-imprinted booklet over the scanners to see seven films that tell of the city's founding, its 1578 renunciation of Catholicism, the Dutch East India Company's domination of world trade, the... The Amsterdam Museum was a pleasant surprise. It offers an overview of Amsterdam history and culture through a compact set of exhibits and related videos. The museum is located in an historic orphanage and the building itself is interesting. Since we were visiting with smaller children (age 6) we were directed to the 'little orphanage' which was a great surprise.... More

A nice museum! If you want to learn more about Amsterdam, you definitely have to visit the Amsterdam Museum. The people at the front desk were very friendly but our guide wasn't that friendly and he was a little bit rude sometimes (we were with a group, and most of them have french as a native but they were studying... I can't understand the negative comments from some people as we found this museum very interesting and absorbing. Don't hoever expect to do this museum in an hour or so - give yourself half a day and you will get the benefit of learning a little of Amsterdam's chequered history. We will be back.

Visited on a Tuesday early afternoon and the museum was fairly busy. The admission fee is EUR10 but got a EUR2,50 discount using a discount card obtained from the hotel. Primarily visited this museum for the Amsterdam DNA and was not disappointed. This exhibit provided an easy walk through of the history of the city. There is a video per... More

If you want to learn about Amsterdam history, this is not the place. The exhibits only provide enough information to tease. For example, they talk about the dam and canals, but not why they were built and why there. They discuss having houses in piles but did not explain whether they have been replaced in modern times. Instead they focused... More

Kind of hidden away in a shopping area just off Dam square. A nice little museum that charts the history of Amsterdam. Find out about the people, politics, trade and Architecture. Novel interactive displays dating from the beginnings of Amsterdam to the modern day. Lots of interesting displays.......and not too busy !

Totally agree with another reviewer. A confusing place to walkaround but still it is OK. Provides an adequate history of the city from the 1200's to present. Worth the money. Crowded
