Oh boy, I’m going to have to go against the tide on this one. If you are just going for summer drinks then you will do fine, there are some very nice outdoor seats inches from the water. Our lunch food was simply terrible, though. The goat cheese salad consisted of a badly prepared small chunk of goat cheese on... More

A delightful cafe in a wonderfully picturseque setting. The service was friendly and efficient. Perfect for a relaxed lunch canalside. Great cappacinos! !

I'm shocked to have looked up this cafe and see it's high ranking given how disappointing our limited experience was. We didn't dine there but we ordered coffee and the apple cake and both were extremely unsatisfactory. The service was very friendly and it's great if you get a nice spot on the deck, which is why I gave it... More

Located in the Jordaan area of Amsterdam, on one of the smaller canals, this is a small pub with about 9 small tables indoors, more outside on the patio. They serve delicious sandwiches and salads, and a good selection of Dutch and Belgian beers. I had the warm goat cheese salad, and friends had the liverwurst sandwich. The service was... More

We wandered into Cafe 't Smalle while waiting for our time slot at Anne Frank's House across the canal. It was a very cold and windy Spring day and we needed something to warm up with. I ordered a hot chocolate with whipped cream and my husband ordered an expresso. Both were served with small gingerbread biscuits. Service was very... More

Dropped by for drinks and appetizers at an outdoor table. Service was inattentive. When I asked for the check the waiter said "Sure!", and then proceeded to check Facebook on his phone for 15 minutes before getting it. Got a glimpse of the kitchen, and it can be described in one word: yuck.

Great beer, friendly service and good people watching at this canal side location. Love the atmosphere of the brown cafes as well. Also tried the poffertjes which were a nice bar snack.

We read about this on Tripadvisor and made it part of our itinerary because of its history. I was not disappointed - it's exactly what it should be - a wonderful "neighborhood bar" from a very early period. It's a great "brown cafe". We were there in late fall and it was cold so we had lunch upstairs and it... More

Upstairs in the winter with either a dram or hot chocolate+marsh-mellows and a good friend or a good book (or both) is heaven. Down stairs or outside in the summer mingling with the locals and tourists is nearly as good. Snoozing out on the quay in the afternoon - summer/winter is perfect. I always visit this place when I am... More

Nice seating near the canal in a quiet spot. Good beer selection and a lunch menu of simple sandwiches and snacks. if you're a fan of liverwurst, I recommend the liverwurst sandwich! Our waiter was really friendly and funny. Have a couple of beers and relax!
