The Jewish Historical Museum is a modern museum of Jewish heritage housed in four monumental synagogues near Waterlooplein in the heart of Amsterdam. Three permanent exhibitions present the history and culture of the Jewish people in the Netherlands. In addition to the three permanent exhibitions, the museum always offers two great temporary exhibitions and the fun JHM Children's museum.

Fascinating

A very fine portrayal of the Jews in Amsterdam since 1600. An enexpected bonus was the Sephardic Synagogue, very simple but powerful and touching.

The Jewish Historical Museum is a break away from the history of WW2 and is in a synagoge. The museum if packed full of information and history to teach Non Jews what Judism is. From its different sects to to faiths celebrations and the history of jewish people in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. A throughly wonderful and informative musuem which... More

I particularly enjoyed the part of the museum that explained Jewish customs, I found out a lot that I did not know before. The exhibition about Jews in Amsterdam was also interesting and informative. I was disappointed we couldn't get into the Portuguese Synagogue as it was Sunday, as I had expected that it would be closed on Saturday and... More

This is a professional museum which is packed with information...however it was not what we expected. It is there to educate people about Jewish culture from very early on until the present day, not necessarily about certain tragedies. If you want to learn more about Jewish CULTURE then this is definitely the place you will want to go. Children however... More

The staff here were very helpful and welcoming. I enjoyed the free audio tour of the synagogue and there was so much to learn and find out. I was able to take the time to explore the artefacts and to watch the informative videos on a range of different subjects related to Judaism. There were so many things to learn... More

The world would be a much a better place if Hitler never existed. There is a lot of beautiful artwork and artifacts throughout museum. They also have videos and a gift shop with appt of items old and new. Travel down the street to the Portugese Synogogue.

This museum comprises i.a. two completely renovated synagogues. The Great Synagogue houses the permanent exposition about the Jews between 1600 and 1900 and the New Synagogue covers the period from 1900 until today. There also is a children museum, worth a visit. The museum also houses temporary exhibitions. Their website, http://www.jhm.nl/collectie/zoeken, shows all the details you need.

went to see the museum but had lunch at their café first. I think this is the first time I saw gefilte fish on a menu. they also had only one person behind the counter taking orders, making the food, and serving. ordered the fish cake sandwich which is chopped up fish but the bun was 3 times as large... I toured the museum with a limited time period of about an hour but was able to see most of the items. My backpack needed to be checked into a locker. The ticket also includes two other sights so I made sure to see those as well.

Set in two old synagogues, this museum is full of exhibits on Jewish ritual and life. Beautlful things, particularly well-presented. You learn a lot here, whether you know anything about Judaism or not.
