I used to work in Amsterdam and I kind of took the Rijk for granted. Then it closed for ten years and boy did I miss it. I went to it's opening this year and it does not disappoint.

I'm not a huge art buff, and get distracted by shiny things, mechanical things, and guns. Yup, this hotel has all of that. The details of some of the pieces were just astounding. Of course lots of paintings, but I wouldn't be able to tell you the great histories. Things that I remember were "The Night Watch" giant painting, the... More

I found this Museum a bit boring. It could be that the more interesting sections were closed for upgrades. They had too many old paintings. I found the Van Gogh museum much more interesting.

A really good idea to visit the "rijksmuseum", you can spend hours inside and learn a lot of things about Netherland, from their history and colony time, to the famous painter of the seventeen century. But the museum close at 5pm :( Even during summer. You can rent an audio guide for 5€, it's an ipod, but i don't know... More

The renovations of the Rijks museum took many years but the result is amazing. The old building got a new life, modern with fantastic displays of the great collections of art. Rembrandt is shown at its best. To avoid the crowd go early when it opens at 9:00 AM, so you will have only a short line. It was also... More

Fantastic Musem, very good refurb even the building itself is great to look at. Go very early if you want to see it all as its massive. Take some water with you as the only cafe is outside the musem and you have to que to get back in. Buy your tickets in advance from your hotel to avoid the... More

Didn't prebook, arrived @ 10, went straight in. Very well designed and you can get right up to the exhibits. Ticket allows you all day entry so we did half of it, went out for lunch in the park and some sun and went back in. Rembrandts need to be seen and Goya. Some fabulous paintings and sculpture. Something for... More

Having spent time here years ago, I was anxious to return. I was not prepared for the multiple long lines - 1 to enter, another to buy tickets - and the crowds and noise throughout the museum. It made it difficult to enjoy much of the art, especially in the most popular areas. A couple of notes: if you need... More

It certainly changed in the 30 years since I have been! As you may know it's been shut for 10 years for revamping. I read all the other reviews and yes, you should buy an e-ticket! online €15. We have a disabled person in our party and we were based with relatives south of Schiphol. Our bus (very good buses... More

Staying in Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)

Neighborhood Profile
Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.
