A calm oasis near the heaving Central Station. You can wander at will amongst the shelves (though reading Dutch would obviously be a help!). Non-members can pay a small fee and use the internet and print stuff. There's a branch of the great Dutch eatery La Place on the top floor and clean (pay) toilets in the basement. Great views... When we planned our trip we were surprised to see the central library as the #2 attraction in Amsterdam. As a family of avid readers we were intrigued. The building itself is pleasant. The problems are how customers are treated: - One added service the library has is to sell tickets to tourist attractions throughout the city. We tried to... More

I wish all cities had libraries like this. Light, airy, spacious, excellent selection of magazines, films and cds as well as books. Brilliant cafe with skyline views over the city. Would love to have this in my town!

While the library isn't exactly a typical tourist attraction, it's definitely worth a visit for the incredible children's section and general layout on each floor.

Modern and nice building, but this is all about the view. Bad thing is far away from center, go at the sunset time and enjoy a coffee in the top floor

Even though it's a pretty long walk from the touristic center of A'dam, this modern 7 story building near the harbor is worth the trek for its modern design, which shows how beautiful a functional public building can be, for it's cafeteria which serves some really unusual choices, and for the view over the city from the outdoor eating area... It is a library, so I would not describe this building as a tourist attraction, People go there to study, read books or even watch movies. Nevertheless, there is a nice restaurant in the last floor where you can have a view of the city of Amsterdam while you enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry. There is an... More

A local friend of mine recommended this place. I wasn't looking for a book, but from the top you get one of the best views of the whole city. Amsterdam is a beautiful place, and this is a great way to take it all in.

A walk from the central station you can find this nice place . Beautiful library (best for kids), in the last floor great restaurant, with natural food and good views of the city. If you have some spare time, it worths the walk.

Really great collections. Well organized bright and cheery. A place that you like to be. Most U.S. libraries should go there and then emulate it back home. Each segment make you feel like you are in a small easy to use libarary instead of a huge place which it is. The folks who work there are very pleasant and helpful.
