'The Netherlands is flat' - well not all of it! Around Maastricht there are steep hills of limestone and this fortress was built on one of them. Underneath are the 'caves', in reality the tunnels of a limestone mine, The fortress was built to repel the string of invaders, from Louis XIV to Napoleon who have attacked this place. It... More

Worth doing as a double tour along with the St Pietersburg caves, which are just a couple of hundred yards away (there's just one pay kiosk for both attractions). Each trip takes about an hour and I think you have to take the escorted tour rather than explore on your own. It's best anyway as the guide explains the fascinating... More

We got a combo ticket for both the fort and the caves, which you can buy at the restaurant next to the fort. There are tours in Dutch and English, however time slots are a bit limited so I recommend checking out their website first. It's easily accessible by car and there's free parking. I thought the tour was very... More

It was a very nice visit, with a guide in the caves. He had a lot to tell about the history of these "mergel" caves. He was able to answer our questions, it was a very nice, not expensive trip! Well recommended!

Im not sure how to say about the fortress. it's like any other average fortress, but the surroundings is nice. Perfect weekend getaway. Sip a cup of coffee or wine, have good talk with family and friends while taking a look out over the city.

I would say if you're already there for the St. Pietersberg Caves tour, do the extra 100m and take the tour of the fort as well. It is worth it for the lesson in history of Maastricht and of course for the view. There is no better view of the city from anywhere else! Take the combined ticket for the... More

Go there for some history lessons about the city, to get out of town and to get a great view over the city. 3 in 1 so worth the visit. If you enjoy walking, there are some nice trail into the hills behind

If you're lucky enough to catch a sunny day in Maastricht, then you should spend it walking around the area around this Fortress. I think you can join some tour for like 7€ and walk inside. I couldn't be bothered to do it, so I just walked around it, which is great!

We had a combined tour of Fortress St Pieter and the North Caves. Although the tour itself was interesting and full of new information (the tour guide tried his best), we did not like the lack of punctuality. on the tickets it was mentioned the visitors need to be ready 15 min before the start of the tour at the... Our family so enjoyed this tour. Our guide, Gerrard, did this tour in English with great stories and great attempts at being thorough and informative. The whole tour was done in English and you are only allowed inside the fortress with a guide. Not allot of printed material available and limited walk in tours. We were told that the guides... More
