The gateway is fairly easy to find - just head for de Hoge Brug and head south past the cannon/walls. The gateway was very impressive - meant to be the oldest in Holland.

When you explore the old city of Maastricht, make sure you reach the old city gates. It is the oldest one in the Netherlands; dates back 13th century! The gate is in great shape, you can take great pictures here. But also, make sure you go through the gate and climb on top of the old city wall, fantastic scenery... More

Good site to see right on the edge of a park - enjoy a nice walk around and see the old city walls; always great to see the preservation of the past.

South of the center are the most beautiful city walls, of which the Helpoort is the main entrance. Very-well preserved this gate is really nice to see, and we were even lucky to catch a beer festival right by its side!

Even though it was difficult to find, it was absolutely worth the walk to see these old town walls and especially the Helpoort. the Photographic potential is endless and it brings the history of Maastricht to life.

We started our historical tour in Maastricht at the Helpoort, for me a great mediëval experience! From all sides you can imagine how it was to live in mediëval Maastricht. After walking around the Helpoort, we went inside (free entrance) and walked on a steeple staircase to several levels: a small but interesting museum (a very friendly guide tells you... More

For such a small city, Maastricht has some great historical sights. Definitely venture to the Helpoort - you can see the old fortifications and many other lovely things - there is a large green space, crooked old homes and cobbled streets. A great photo opp.

This is supposed to be one of the oldest European town gates. Maastricht has a few of these. Helpoort is one of the most well maintained of them. Should be visited.

If like me you like to see as much as possible in a destination, I would suggest going to the Tourist Office on arrival. There you can purchase a couple of town trails for about 2 Euros apiece - the Old Town Trail and the Fortifications Trail, both available in English, cover the Helpoort and take about an hour and... You almost don't expect to see it until it's right in front of you. Getting there, we walked through a beautiful park with more remnants of a wall and tower - just absolutely beautiful! It was a great day (the brochure advertised that Maastricht was "the sunniest town in the Netherlands", and it was definitely sunny when we were there!).... More
