Lovely period furniture and delicious onsite restaurant

We enjoyed our visit here and it's worth a 20 minute stop if you're in the area. The castle is well-preserved (you can only tour the ground floor) and has some beautiful period furniture on display. We had lunch in the onsite restaurant located in the former stables and it was fantastic - a very kind server and the food... More

Visited on a cold Spring day staying just outside of Groningen at my friend's house. Having never visited the Netherlands before, I was impressed at how all the staff, signs and leaflets were all in English as well as Dutch and felt welcomed by the staff. Visiting on a cold day limits your activities to inside the house but it... More

Really lovely place to visit on a summer's afternoon. Take a stroll round interesting gardens, view the house with its interesting rooms and furniture - easy to imagine what it would be like as a family home - and enjoy lunch or afternoon tea at the good café/restaurant where it was clear locals were calling as well.

This Dutch equivalent of a manor house is beautifully preserved and lovingly tended. There is information in several languages about the families who lived there and the furniture and other items in the room. The kitchen is particularly interesting and the garden makes a pleasant short walk. It's well worth a detour if you're in the area. The food at... More

In the heart of the "Hogeland" of Groningen province (i.e., the northern part that over the centuries was gained from the Northern Sea), in the village of Uithuizen, the Menkema borough is located, a 17th-century large villa with a beautiful garden. The interior of the villa, and it's collection of antiquities, is highly worthwhile (1-2 hours), as is the garden... More

The Menkemaborg is an estate museum with welldesigned and wellkept gardens and grounds. When its last resident died in 1902 the heiress sold all the furniture and treasures and the house was left empty for a longer period of time. The host at Menkemaborg told us, how the current beautiful interior was created by buying a replacement item for every... More

The Menkemaborg is more a big estate than a real castle, the word "Borg" was used for fortified houses in the North of the Netherlands (the area of Friesland and Groningen), usually these ones were defendeable against enemies, but they were and are less impressive than the castles in the areas of Noord-Holland or Gelderland in the Netherlands (and certainly...
