I always try to visit the town halls in every city I visit as they always hold nice rooms, paintings, work of arts. Unfortunately it was not open to the public during my visit and could only appreciate the exterior and the location by the river.

This is one of those buildings you admire from the outside when you walk around a new town. Not open for sightseeing inside.

It was museum night and therefore the Rathaus was open until midnight. Arriving about ten, we looked at the beautiful rooms with panelling and painting on the ceiling. Orly wanted to know what else could be seen. we followed her upstairs to the voting chamber and then a wonderful choir arrived to sing splendid songs, It was slightly surreal but... More

Given so many wonderful architectural and historical gems in the old town, the Rathaus takes a back seat when planning the sites one would want to highlight. We saw it anumber of times as we walked by or sat at Storchen's outdoor bar area having an afternoon refreshment. Sorry to say it doesn't get a lot of attention.

We were not able to go inside as it was a weekend and closed. We were looking specifically for it as a friend of ours was married there years ago.

If it was not noted on my map of attractions, I might not have noticed it easily. The building is a nice but there is nothing particular about it. I heard one can attend the sessions, but at the time I visited no sessions were there so for me it was just a building and not an impressive one.

The place where the parliaments of Zurich town (city parliament) and Zurich Kanton (canton) meet. On Monday it is the representatives of the canton, on Wednesday the local city parliament. And you can stroll in and visit the session from the balcony on the top floor, once you passed the security at the entrance. Worth a visit during sessions.

the sessions of the parliaments are open to the public (levels: Canton and City of Zurich, Mondays and Wednesdays): worth a short visit to feel the "spirit" of Swiss democraty :-) - but you need some German language skills or some locals to translate the essentials (be aware of the fact that they speak a local German dialect! - nice...
