A true walking history of Switzerland, more fascinating than it sounds. And surprisingly candid about events that most museums would rather sweep under the rug. Free guided tour app for your iphone, worthwhile.

I had an absolute blast at this museum. It wasn't crowded at all, which was so nice. I really appreciated the theme of each room, and how it told the story of Switzerland throughout its history. Some amazingly cool and unique pieces of memorabilia here, and this is a MUST visit if you are into medieval arms and armor. I... More

While the chronology of certain exhibits was a bit jumbled and hard to follow, the overall museum experience was very helpful for better understanding Swiss history and the national character. Be prepared to check backpacks or shopping bags. Only purses may be carried into the exhibit areas. There is a cloakroom on the ground floor near the ticket counter, which... More

This museum was great to get an understanding of swiss history from a variety of perspectives - religious, political, and economical. Engaging exhibits and translations into English and Italian. There is also an app you can download in the lobby - but I'm not sure if it works because we waited to download it until after we left the lobby... More

The museum chronicles Swiss history. There was a special exhibition during our visit. I would have probably enjoyed it more if I knew German, French (more fluently than I do!) or Italian as the English explanations and signage were a bit lacking.

I don't know about you, but it was a mystery to me how a country in the middle of the mountains with four different official languages came to be at all. Well, it's a mystery no more, with the National Museum taking Switzerland's complex history and patchwork of cultures and presenting it in an easy to digest and engaging format.... More

Looking back it took me too long until I went there...it broadened my view and understanding of Switzerland and the Swiss perspective/position within Europe a lot...besides the building itself is worth a visit...and all the different temporary exhibitions which open your eyes regarding this "continental island" in relation to the rest of Europe and/or the world...sometimes really stunning...

great museum with lots of kids stuff, which is cool but does slightly overshadow some of the interest!

This museum is a bit of a mixed bag but worth a walk through. The building is gorgeous. Make sure you go up to the turrets. There is a lot of "archeological" stuff eg arrowheads and pottery but also interesting information on Switzerland's cultural and political history. Fascinating stuff re historical treatment of Jews, witches and religious reformers. Another highlight... More

Loved the museum - permanent collection is great and the Charlemagne exhibition was fabulous, you can easily spend half a day here!
