It was a decent introduction into the history of Switzerland, but I thought that there would be more about the different cantons of the country with more history from those areas. OK stop.

Located in central Zurich, right across the street from the Hauptbahnhof, this is the kind of museum I personally find to be of little or no interest. Of course, there's always the chance that I will be surprised, which is why I even go to such places when traveling. But alas, I was not surprised here. If you are a... More

Situated in a beautiful building that is part of the experience, it is right in the center of town so no excuse not to visit. I had a ZurichCard so entry was free. Interesting exhibits and most translated for us non-Helvetians who haven't mastered any of the 4 official languages. Usual 'dynamic learning' layout without too much surprises, though the... More

The Swiss are proud of their heritage and they have a high standard of living. This musuem reflects the design skills of the Swiss and the progress they have made as a culture. They have huge porcelin stoves with detailed tiles in the same area with an IKEA type of home furnishing. The musuem mixes the old and the new... More

The museum has some very nice old rooms to explore that look like they were from a castle. Otherwise, I thought the museum was pretty average. It was on the expensive side, and if you have other things to do in zurich, I would do them. Niederdorfstrasse was what we liked the most.

We were interested in visiting the Swiss National Museum to gain an instructive overview of Swiss history and culture. While there were many interesting exhibits, the traffic flow of the museum was puzzling at best, maddening at worst.....one would move from a room on subjects in the 18th century, move to the next room, and find subjects in a period... The army collection, which provides many old weapons and dress of soldiers were so interesting and unique. Also collections of traditional dresses were nice to see.

Consider at least 2-3 hours to visit all! There are often temporary exhibitions alongside with permanent ones, regarding the Swiss history: you can find many surprises there, from daily-life objects of the '50s, to the early 1900 skiing equipment. Often explanations are even available in English, Italian, and French!

We came here on a wet afternoon and spent an informative couple of hours. The museum is located in walking distance from the old town just beyond the main railway station. Firstly the design of the building is very unusual for a museum - looks like an renovated castle. Alas, there is a lot of construction work going on until... More
