A very traditional museum seeped in the diversity of Swiss history. The Battle of Murten/Morat is document as a decisive turning point in Swiss history. After Murten France more or less abandoned expectations of conquest. Swiss history, because of its diverse ethnicity, is complicated as the three official languages attest.

Beautiful building just near the Bahnhof. Nice collection of items depicting Swiss life at various times in history, including whole rooms transported. Worth 90 minutes to 2 hours. No air conditioning - avoid on hot days as it gets sultry.

A beautiful place to spent 2-3 hours, learning and understanding the history of Switzerland, why it is doing so well! Worthwhile investment of time for all including families and kids. There are paintings, Swiss famous industries, miniatures soldiers, "safe deposit boxes" of Swiss banking industry etc. We thoroughly enjoy the whole afternoon there! Very conveniently located, next to Zurich Main... More

Well worth a look as there is a large section on Swiss National history. The guided tour is well worth joining as they speak in depth and give back grounding for there treasured pieces.

When you see one you have seen them all. Or all museums look alike. Not in this case. The Swiss National museum is a unique experience. Not only the structure in which it is housed has a grandeur and charm befitting a museum but the display is very differently done. A wheel ehich revolves displaying the highlights of Switzerland or... More

The museum building of 1898 in the historicist style was built by Gustav Gull in the form of the French Renaissance city chateaus. His impressive architecture with dozens of towers, courts and his astonishing park on an island between the rivers Sihl and Limmat has become one of the main sights of the Old City District of Zurich. The exhibition... More

Despite being in a beautiful historic building, with Switzerland being the birthplace of Celtic culture it was unbelievable that the Swiss National Museum is filled to the brim with virtually nothing of interest. As someone who loves history and visits museums wherever I go this must rank as the most disappointing museum I have ever visited. As a family, usually... More

The museum can act as a good introduction to the Swiss history. However, what impresses about it is the building itself which can be mistaken for a large church or fortress. Also the tower is impressive. Its location in front of the train station makes it the most easily accessible landmark in Zurich.

Very large museum but definitely worth the walk through. Pretty cheap as well so you really couldn't go wrong!
