If you're visiting Lugano, this is a must regardless of the weather. Don't let the weather put you off. If you have a car you can park at their car park for 10 F from 8-8pm. Which is much cheaper than other parking.

My sons and I went up Mont San Salvatore by funicular. The views are absolutely amazing - it was definitely worth the trip.

From Paradiso it's a nice ride with the Funicular up to near the top of Monte San Salvatore. By foot (can easily be done) you reach the Chapel with a Terrace that can be reached entering the Chapel on the backside. Views from here are simply breathtaking!

We took the funicular up to the top and then walked the trail to Carona and had lunch and then continued down to Melide to train it back to Lugano. The view from the top is amazing, you do have to go up a short trail and some stairs to get to the top of the church for the best... More

We didn't feel that the €26 fare (each) was unreasonable as we took the funicular to the top and spent most of the day there. There is a church you can visit then climb on to the roof for just amazing 360 degree views. This was really a highlight of our time in Italy. The eatery at the top of... More

San Salvatore is a fantastic landmark of Lugano, sitting majestically on the Lago Lugano, overlooking the city and surrounding area! On the top there is a restaurant/café along with a small chapel and viewing terraces. The top can either be reached with the Funiculare (not free!) based from Lugano-Paradiso or on foot across the various hiking paths along the mountainside.... More

To get the best views of Lake Lugano requires a bit of a trek as those nearer the Funicular station are often partially blocked by trees. The view we found was about 15 minutes walk over rough. Problem we had was the funicular was €26 EACH. Plus they have the cheek to charge €4 to park in their car park.... More
