We had a Swiss rail pass so we didn't have to pay for this special train. Locarno, SW to Domodossola, IT through the mountains. Just be aware that there is a bigger gap in returns later in the day and we ended up missing some sights on the way back because it was dark. The little table between the seats... More

for us it is to get to locarno or to go to domodossola to get the train to the french part of switzerland. kids take the train to school everyday. the panorama train is nice but you can take the regular one. if you drive thru tegna, think of me! More

The rail journey is great with some stunning scenery, but one thing you should take into consideration is, that when you are actually on the train you don't see many of the spectacular bridges that cross many of the "hundred" valleys for obvious reasons. More

You may take the complete loop around Lake Maggiore, can be done easily within the day. My self I would prefer Stresa as a start and end point (much nicer I think than Locarno). To do the complete loop, take the boat from Stresa to Locarno, then from Locarno take the Centovalli train where you can continue all the way... More

Well, not quite a hundred valleys but still a lot of breath-taking views and amazing scenery. The "Centovalli Railway" runs between Domodossola in NW Italy and Locarno in Southern Switzerland and was developed in the early 1900s to connect the Swiss lakeside town with the Ossola Valley in Italy's Piedmont region. It's a narrow-gauge railroad that runs electric trains, most... More

From Ascona in our case or other lake based towns take the bus (if required) to Locarno then the Centovalli railwaywhich runs from the lower station platform. You will be treated to a lovely ride through the "hundred valleys" alighting at Domodossolo. Change trains here for the fast train to Stresa (be careful where you sit as most seats on... More
