Even on a rainy day at Lago Maggiore this proved a great day out. Either start from Locarno in Switzerland to Domodossola or like us start in Domodossola and travel to Locarno, in both cases return to your starting point by boat on the lake. Mountain villages completely unseen by normal road, high peaks with refuges, waterfalls and sheer drops... More

Picturesque Swiss and Italian towns, snow capped mountains, waterfalls. This is an amazing train ride. This ride is must if you are going to Europe.

We took this trip as part of the Lake Maggiore Express package. We first had to travel to Domodossola on an Italian train that some vandals had spray-painted so that we could not see out of the windows. It was, therefore, a breath of fresh air to get onto the Swiss Centovalli train. It was much larger than it appears... More

first tip, if travelling from locarno to domodossola sit on the left side and of course if travelling form dom to locarno then sit on the right! the ride takes you through beautiful open countryside then on suspended track above spectacular gorges, we had lovely sunny weather which makes all the difference,at times seemingly suspended in mid air.A must when... This can be done as a return trip or a circular which includes a boat trip on lake maggiore. Yes take first class for space and less crowding but not for any extra comfort!! Seats are the same as second class in the new panoramic trains (indicated in red in the timetable) and for which there is a 2 Sfr... More

This train ride simply takes your breath away constantly. And the Swiss precision of train times takes away any guesswork.

Loved the ride through Italy with the wonderful views. The train was new and had beautiful clean windows to take in all the beautiful scenery. Ended up in Locarno. A gorgeous city.

Domodossola to Locarno by 1metre gauge railway. Trip takes about two hours each way along panoramic mountain valley and passes. Very enjoyable journey in modern electric rolling stock with toilet and buffet trolley service. 24 Euros second class or 33 Euros first class. if train busy go first as less crowded. Clean windows some trains open others sealed. Pretty views... More

Really beautiful and relaxing little train. we have traveled from Ponte Brolla to Verdasio on nice sunny day and enjoyed the journey a lot. you can catch cable cars for Rasa (must see if you are in this area) and Monte di Comino from Verdasio. You can also visit Costa by cable car from 5 min walk from Intragna train... More

We were unlucky with the weather when we went, we'd booked it for a particular weekend and didn't have much choice on when to go. The train ride is lovely, nice and relaxing and so many great things along the way. This is where the weather is important, we saw some stunning scenery but in the rain it wasn't quite... More
