I've passed through Bellinzona many times over the last 25 years without stopping until this month. Well worth stopping to see at least 2 of the towns castles. This one is nearest the train station and can be easily reached by a lift just off the main road from the station. The walls are very well preserved. It's the only... More

Bellinzona sits right next to E35 highway; which means if you're driving from Switzerland towards Milan (or vice versa), you can enjoy this place as a quick stop. For a quick stop; the place is excellent. Convenient (underground) public parking right next to the castle. And you can hop on to the elevator right next to the exit of garage.... More

On the road from Ascona to Gottard Pass we took a few hours break to visit the old town of Bellinzona. On a rock just in the center is Castegrande. It is easy to go up using the road, the stairs or the elevator. We chose the road who goes among vineyards and stone fances. Step by step arrived on... More

We did not visit the castle but just by chance found the Grotto del Castelgrande where we had dinner. The view from the terrace is impressive, the food very good but a bit too big portions for our taste. The servers come from the local hotel school and do a great job.

We came back twice to explore the castle because it is really huge and we took a lot of pictures. We walked all the way down the Murata in the heat and we walked back to the castle through the tunnel in the wall.

We viewed all 3 of the castles in Bellinzona in one day. Essentially, we did enough of a tour to get an overview. We felt that was all we needed to do. *Note: This was our least favorite of the 3.

This was the first time that I entered a castle by riding an elevator! Castelgrande is mainly walls and towers. There are no interiors. Instead, one enjoys the views of the town and the other castles. There is a tower with a 5 Franc admission fee, but we didn't climb this. We walked a bit on the walls instead. What... More

Beautiful castle with lush green grounds, excellent views, and not a lot of tourists. Easy 10-minute walk from the train station. And free admission! Steps up are not bad, but there's even an elevator for those who need it. Highly recommended if you're passing through Bellinzona on the way to Lugano and want to do something a little off the...
