Description: One of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps: the Bernina Express...
One of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps: the Bernina Express from Chur/Davos to Tirano (via St. Moritz) links up regions with different languages and cultures. This is not a rack railway and the train winds its way gently through splendid scenery. One of the highlights is the panoramic journey through the UNESCO World Heritage RhB. On the highest railway across the Alps, the Bernina Express climbs up to the glistening glaciers before descending to the palms of Italy far below. This rail link between Northern and Southern Europe builds bridges between regions with different languages and cultures.

I treated myself to this as part of my route from Zurich to Bologna - and I definitely wasn't disappointed. You're made to feel very welcome on board, with courteous, friendly staff. The seats are comfortable, there are maps and brochures, plus coffee & pretzels (a tad pricey, but you don't care) and of course the panoramic windows are just... More

Had a great day on the Bernina express. Some stunning views and amazing engineering. There and back in a day was a bit much, so if ding again, think we might have stayed overnight in Tirano or Lugano.

We decided to take a day trip to Switzerland during a recent stay in Milan. Having read about this train journey on various websites including Seat61, we decided on the return route from Tirano to St Moritz and booked our train tickets in advance on the Rhätische Bahn website. You can go a lot further into Switzerland but sadly we... More

We boarded the Bernina Express in Chur in mid April, having purchased the tickets on-line in March. It lives up to its reputation for alpine viewing. We sat in the left side window, it seemed the views were better on the right side of the coach. Despite the cabin being full, there was plenty of space for pictures from the... More

My first trip on a train happened to be through the Swiss Alps and into Tirano, Italy. The views were absolutely amazing. You go from the Alps into a subtropical climate where they are growing just about anything that can grow. The vineyards stretch for miles from the bottom of the valley up to the edges of the alps. Stopped... More

We didn't travel on the official " Bernina express" scenic train but one of the regular passenger trains that travel the exact same route. We elected to go 1st class and didn't regret that for a moment. We had the carriage right behind then driver practically all to ourselves. The views were spectacular, the carriage clean and spacious. We would... More

We took this route to travel down towards Italy on our backpacking trip. It's an absolute must do! The ride itself was included in our Interrail passes but we did pay for reservation fees. Which is an absolute bargain! We did the Chur to Lugano (bus connection in Tirano) route. The train itself is clean spacious and the windows are... More

There are many companies offering the Bernina Express tour but it's a standard train journey that you can book yourself and also use the Swiss travel card. You do need a seat reservation similar to the Glacier Express. We travelled the Bernina from St Moritz on the following day from travelling the Glacier Express from Zermatt. There are many comments... More
