Description: One of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps: the Bernina Express...
One of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps: the Bernina Express from Chur/Davos to Tirano (via St. Moritz) links up regions with different languages and cultures. This is not a rack railway and the train winds its way gently through splendid scenery. One of the highlights is the panoramic journey through the UNESCO World Heritage RhB. On the highest railway across the Alps, the Bernina Express climbs up to the glistening glaciers before descending to the palms of Italy far below. This rail link between Northern and Southern Europe builds bridges between regions with different languages and cultures.

Insight Vacations arranged a ride on the Bernina Express. It was great. (just as an aside the Insight Vacations Country Roads tour of Baveria, Austria & Switzerland was fantastic). From the train we saw huge mountains, beautiful lakes and the Swiss countryside at its best. The only way I know to see all tat without having drive. It sure you... More

We had a 8 day holiday in Switzerland as part of the celebrations of my (yet to arrive) 65th birthday, and it was all based around the first class Swiss rail passes we had purchased. Having spent £400 for each of us, I was determined to make the most advantage of this outlay, so the itinerary became rather full, not... More

An opportunity to travel through unspoilt areas of Switzerland and marvel at the scenery, but the most awesome part is some of the feats of engineering to build this line many of them over a hundred years old and built by hand. There is a multi-language commentary which is quite informative.

We took Bernina express from Tirano to Morteratsch and had a nice walk up to the glacier; the view from the train was incredible, something one must experience

Travelled from atirano to chur on the express. The climb out of tirano is spectacular as you keep seeing the same view from ever increasing altitude. Recommend you book via DB if you want to pay half the cost of other outlets(see The man in seat 61 website for detailed instructions).

We travelled from Lucerne to Terino on the Bernina Rail. After originally trying unsuccessfully to book online from Australia our Swiss friends booked it in Lucerne for us. The trip was spectacular and comfortable, the scenery special, the experience would be wonderful in any season, but it could be made better with some attention to detail. We got onto carriage... We took the Bernina Express from Tirano to St. Moritz (a UNESCO World Heritage Site.) The ride lasted just over two hours & the higher & higher we got, the more beautiful the scenery became. The train takes many twists & turns, so views on both sides on the train are great. The windows in the train cars open halfway,... More

A scenic drive that took us from St. Moritz across the Italian border to Tirano. It is the highest railway across the Alps and at first it takes you up to the milky white glaciers before driving down to the valley of Tirano in Italy. The route passes through various terrains of orchards, chestnut trees and vineyards on its way... More

The railway line is so steep that it necessarily has to twist and turn its way up the mountains. This means that whichever side of the train you sit on, you get to see the views. The carriages have really high windows so that you can see right up to the mountain peaks. We stopped near the summit for a... More

At the back of the train is an open air car that will be a lot more fun than the panorama cars (provided of course that the weather is comfortable).
