The most recent redesign of this old church was made according to plans from the mid-19th century that called for colorfully painted walls. The stained glass of the original Catholic church may have been removed, but these walls more than make up for that - beautiful!

During the Reformation, the city of St Gallen turned Protestant, while the Abbey remained Catholic (and the city was surrounded by the Prince-Abbot's Catholic territory). The City Church of St. Laurenzen is located adjacent to the St. Gall Monastery and is a nice stop while visiting St. Gallen. The church itself is pretty simple compared to its neighbor, but is still worth it. This church is particularly fascinating for its historical importance during the reformation of the town in the 16th century. It became the first reformed church of the area and was located right next to the monastery, which was under the protection of the holy empire.
