It took an hour by train from Zurich to St Gallen. Once at St Gallen, it was an easy walk of about 10 minutes to reach the Abbey of St Gall and the Abbey Library next to it. The Abbey Library was really one of a kind. It was not big but the decor, the atmosphere and the centuries of... More

Being a Geek, I loved visiting this library. The Audio Guide was a must have as there wasn't any alternative forms of information. The staff were great

Wow, what an experience! I have never seen a library like it. make sure it's open before you visit, and even if you don't like books, it's totally worthwhile. Stunning architecture and it's one of the oldest library in the world (on the list of UNESCO world heritage, ie a must-see). I am Swiss and live abroad and wasn't even... More

A truly incredible room, all sweeping curves and curls, containing a vast amount of knowledge, wisdom and spirituality. A wonderful step back to times when religion and science were still compatible to one another.

Though just a bit smaller, the 17th-century library holds its own with those of Prague and Vienna in the splendor of its decoration and architecture. Its medieval manuscript collection ranks with the finest in the world.

Seeing a book bound with plates that belonged to Charlemagne was jaw dropping. If you love history, or books you will love this. One room packed with ancient books. An amazing sight and a beautiful room aside from the books... if you can get past that. You have to wear one size fits a giant slippers over your shoes, and... More

This library has one of Europes largest collections of books predating 1000 AD. The first floor exhibition is quite small, but packed from floor to ceiling with books in a room two floors high. Staff are knowledgable and courteous, and my guests were 50% enthralled and 50% bored! It seems either you love it or hate it.

One of the three UNESCO world heritage sites near Lake Constance. An absolute must see in Sankt Gallen, and you can go right through to the Cathedral and the historic city center.

Do not miss the Abbey Library of St. Gall in St. Gallen. During a driving tour, fifty miles from Zurich, we stopped to tour the Abbey Library of St Gall. This was a treat that took a short time out of our day. The collection of books and manuscripts are in a library with woodwork and stucco that are eye... More
