On a tip from our host, we visited this old city and found not just an amazing church but also an incredible library with writings dating over 1500 years. The see the whole "package" was incredible. We had visited many churches and cathedrals during our trip but this one was our favorite. The story behind the church, the architecture, etc.... More

This is a sight not to be missed in Switzerland. Visited st Gallen especially to see the library. Getting the audio guide is a must. Go early before the tour buses arrive.

Truly a must-see in St. Gallen. It won't take you long, but you will be awestruck by the beautiful Rococo architecture and art. There's even a mummy inside! No pictures allowed, though and you must wear slippers (provided) to enter and leave your coat and bags in the locker. This was my second visit.

Firstly, taking pictures inside the library is prohibited so I don't know why some visitors have pictures to share. If you are going to visit the library, please observe the rules and be part of the conservation of these treasures from the 16th centuries. We bought a postcard from the shop which costs only CHF1-2 for memory. The entry is... More

Took the train from Bregenz to St Gallen for a day trip, and found this to be the highlight of the day. It’s an absolutely stunning library with painted and stucco ceilings, wooden handcrafted bookcases, and inlaid floors. It could be a scene from Hogwarts. There are a number of medieval books and manuscripts on display showing beautiful artwork and... More

It is certainly quite a library - both architecturally and of course the content. The real problem is that you only get to see a few of the vast collection of ancient manuscripts. The ones they had out for us were to do with ancient laws (Visigoths etc). I had an English audioguide and the signs were in German and... More

During a visit to Bodensee, I took a side trip and went to the Stifsbibliothek at the Kloster of St. Gallen. For those who love books, for those who love history, and for those who love learning, it is -- as it states in Greek on the entrance to the library -- a "pharmacy of the soul". Enter the confines... It is so beautiful, that I felt like crying. Must visit!! You are not allowed with photo camera(you have to lock it before you enter) and must put over your shoes some big shoes from them.

The Library is housing works from 1200. The hand written books are displayed showing such painstakingly beautiful handwriting. The monks did most of the writing and spent their whole lives at it. The library (one large room) is lined with beautiful wooden bookcases of the finest wood. The ceilings are coffered with paintings. You can just feel the history, I... More
