Very impressive little collection full of treasures. We really loved this place and felt the atmosphere of all the ages ago!

Full disclosure - my graduate work was in medieval studies, so I knew the St Gallen collection was a major big deal, but never had a reason to visit it 'in person'. I finally found an excuse for a trip there this weekend and was not disappointed. I had never before seen so many ninth-century books on display in one... More

We were driving from Vaduz to Zurich and there's a clearly faster way to get there; however, we decided to take the side trip to see the Abbey library. The weather was bad and the driving was sometimes harrowing but it was so worth it. St. Gallen, the city, was having a celebration and so many of the streets were... More

We were lucky to get inside the library as it is only open on certain days (check website before going). Before entering you are asked to put some large slippers over your shoes so as not to damage the floors which shows you how well preserved this library truly is. There are no words for the beauty of the library... More

This library carries all the elements of historical significance for the area. The staff takes care that visitors preserve the importance of the exhibits (you must wear soft coverings over your shoes). Staff are also placed to answer any questions.

This library is stunning and unique. What strikes the visitor is the beauty and harmony of the room. You can feel the atmosphere of a glorious past here. The ceiling is decorated with expressive baroque paintings depicting scenes from the Bible. There are beautiful illuminated writings exhibited, too. The Egyptian mummy seems somewhat out of place, but reflects the mood... More

No wonder this was selected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The collection of rare books are oustanding. This library is part of the whole baroque style of the abbey.

Went there while visiting St Gallen for a day and we were totally amazed. Easy to buy a ticket, clean toilets and lockers to leave your belongings. The library is not big but it is much more than books. The decoration was breathtaking, with a unique combination of wood and baroque ceiling. There was excibitions about the history of the... More

We found this library to be incredible and so interesting. All the ancient books force you to rethink just how much work goes into bookmaking. Though some signs and tours are only in German, there is a lot of information that's also in English.
