A visit to the Stiftsbibliothek is a must and a unique highlight for every visitor to St. Gallen. It's simply impressive, the large collection of books, handwritten and handpainted, and remember, St. Gallen is one of the birthplaces where books were handmade by the monks of the St. Gallen Abbey.

The interior of this room is of breathtaking beauty, with its superb roccoco design intact and all of its woodwork intact. From an architectural view alone it is well worth a visit. There are special exhibitions and the one we saw on the development of law was very well-presented. For those interested in Irish history - St Gallen himself was... More

I spent a day visiting St Gallen on my mothers recommendation. This was a find. The Abbey is a functioning school and rings with a laughter and hollers. The library was stunning. It looks exactly like the description of libraries in every romance I've ever read. I used the audio guide and got really great descriptions. I recommend this visit... More

This library contains some of the oldest books in the world. The calligraphy and artwork they contain is amazing. While everything is behind locked doors or under glass, some of the most interesting works are open with good explanation cards in both German and English. The "Inquisitor's Manual" containing everything the inquisitor/torturer needed to know is an extremely large and... More

I'd seen the photos, but being there in the library itself to stand and gaze at the ceiling paintings and all the books/manuscripts was still quite a wonderful experience. The current exhibition displays manuscripts from the library relating to law and lawmakers. I think it changes annually, so may be worth checking their website beforehand if you're interested in particular... More

A spectacular place full of history. I was amazed at the old books, the architecture. You can feel the history. The oldest book ever written in German is there. A must when visiting Sankt Gallen.

That first moment of stepping over the threshold and seeing the amazing and beautiful woodwork was awe-inspiring. Truly unreal-it was a highlight of our trip. Add in the displays of the incredible historical books, and you have yourself one of the most beautiful historical rooms that will be hard to beat. It was fascinating to learn about the monks &... If you enjoy learning about Western history, then don't miss the Abbey Library. We were mesmerised by the display of texts dating back to the 9th Century giving details on the development of law and the role of church and state. Of course that was after we picked our jaws up from the floor after entering the library, possibly, the... More

This world heritage site at Saint Gallen is a must see if you are in Switzerland and you have no excuse if you are in Zurch! We drove from Zurich and it took a good 1 hour from the centre of town. We arranged with the local information centre for an English speaking guide but you don't necessarily need one... More
