During a visit to Bodensee, I took a side trip and went to the Stifsbibliothek at the Kloster of St. Gallen. For those who love books, for those who love history, and for those who love learning, it is -- as it states in Greek on the entrance to the library -- a "pharmacy of the soul". Enter the confines... It is so beautiful, that I felt like crying. Must visit!! You are not allowed with photo camera(you have to lock it before you enter) and must put over your shoes some big shoes from them.

The Library is housing works from 1200. The hand written books are displayed showing such painstakingly beautiful handwriting. The monks did most of the writing and spent their whole lives at it. The library (one large room) is lined with beautiful wooden bookcases of the finest wood. The ceilings are coffered with paintings. You can just feel the history, I... More

So wonderful to be inside this library, to smell the books, to see the shelving and flooring and desks. Fascinating exhibition of the legal systems as documented in books from the Romans to the popes and through the Middle Ages.

No doubt this Abbey Library is a top tourist attraction. Granted UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 1983, this Library remains on my top 10 wanted-to-go list. Lucky I was there in the end of May and no crowds seen. I was mesmerized by its baroque architecture including the doorway leading into the Library. There are many manuscripts on display. Though... Stunning!!! I was so fascinated by history, old books and interior. Maybe because I love libraries, but in my opinion, this is something people should definitely see.

The place is as beautiful as it looked on pictures, though it was smaller than expected (guess I'm too used to the size of modern day library). Free admission with the Swiss Rail Pass but no photography was allowed. It is certainly amazing seeing some books on displayed in glass cases & the beautiful hand writings in the books. A... More

We took a day-trip by train from Zurich to St. Galen and visited the Abbey Library, which was founded in the 8th century. Several extremely old books were displayed, dating from that time period, which I found to be fascinating. The town of St. Galen is also old and charming. We really enjoyed this visit.
