A spectacular place full of history. I was amazed at the old books, the architecture. You can feel the history. The oldest book ever written in German is there. A must when visiting Sankt Gallen.

That first moment of stepping over the threshold and seeing the amazing and beautiful woodwork was awe-inspiring. Truly unreal-it was a highlight of our trip. Add in the displays of the incredible historical books, and you have yourself one of the most beautiful historical rooms that will be hard to beat. It was fascinating to learn about the monks &... If you enjoy learning about Western history, then don't miss the Abbey Library. We were mesmerised by the display of texts dating back to the 9th Century giving details on the development of law and the role of church and state. Of course that was after we picked our jaws up from the floor after entering the library, possibly, the... More

This world heritage site at Saint Gallen is a must see if you are in Switzerland and you have no excuse if you are in Zurch! We drove from Zurich and it took a good 1 hour from the centre of town. We arranged with the local information centre for an English speaking guide but you don't necessarily need one... More

Definitely take the headsets: only 110 persons are allowed in at the same time and all have to put on a pair of "slippers" over their shoes. Of the manuscripts held here, 400 date to before 1'000 and another 500 before 1'500! Not only theology, but also judiciary manuscripts - truly one of the wonders of the world and well... More

It is simply stunning. Completely wowed by this library. The books on display were truly magnificent. Should get top marks and then some, however I got shouted at for taking a photo (no flash) and it's a little pricey given the size. The larger museum downstairs was a ok. However it's a definite must if you're in St. Gallen.

We're sorry for you being shout at for taking photos. Photographing isn't allowed inside the library as signs inform you before you enter the Baroque hall. We prohibit photographing to protect our manuscripts. More

Trip to this thousand+ year old abbey library was simply amazing, and very inspirational. The architecture spans several historical eras, as do the books. Very well done presentations, with audio guides in English. Quite impressive.

I have visited this beautiful library together with my friend. The fee was not much, we changed to shoes to comfortable slippers and entered the magical world of the library! I really liked the whole atmosphere there and exhibitions explaining the development of the paper from ancient Egyptians up to Guttenberg book printing time...It is the oldest library in Switzerland... As a former student of history and architecture the library itself was lovely but practically I thought the entry 12 Francs was far too high for what was offered. Even if you read the few small signs and studied each painting carefully you probably could still be done in under 10 minutes. Plus even with the high entry fee visitors... More
