The Abbey Library is well worth a visit even for those not into books. Containing manuscripts dating as far back as the 8th Century, some of which are open for reading (if you can read the handwriting!), this is an attraction that is missed by many, but should be on the "must-see" list of everyone visiting Switzerland. To get the... More

When you arrive in St Gallen you see the cathedral, which is worth going round in its own right. The frescos painted on the ceiling rival any in Rome. Park in the underground car park you will see signed up. Behind the cathedral is the old monastery which houses the Stiftsbibliothek which used to be the Abbey library. You need to... More

Don't miss this if you are in St. Gallen. It is quite a spectacular little room. I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 because they don't allow photography, and also because I've seen Stift Melk in Melk, Austria, which is bigger and more magnificent (Stift Melk allow photographs to be taken). More

This delightful piece of history is so well maintained it should be around for another 800 years. It is ornate and fascinating with a few things you wouldn't expect in a library (like a mummy). Everyone is required to put cloth booties (provided by the museum) over their street shoes to minimize damage to the floors. Only a specified number... More

We drove to Zürich from Czech Republic but decided to get off the bus already in St. Gallen. After touring through kind a sleepy and lovely center we arrived to the dominant church and decided to see the library, which just opened in the morning. What a neat service welcomed us at the desk, they even assisted us to put... More

The room with the old library is amazing, we were lucky to join a guided tour explaining what we could see. The guided tour was well worth it (included in the price) as otherwise you wouldn't know or understand as much of the place. Although I found the entryprice to be a bit expensive, it was time well spent. More

I love old buildings, churches, cathedrals etc, and this is attraction is rated as one of my favourite. You cannot help but stand and stare up at the ceiling with your mouth gaping open. Your mind is boggled when you see how old the manuscripts are, and you are amazed at how well they are preserved and how they have... More

The Abbey Library is an UNESCO World Heritage site, located at the cathedral. Built in the 18th century, the library is small, but very impressive. Walking into the library immediately makes one feel as if we're being transported back in time, where books were handwritten and well treasured. With a bit more imagination (and a help of a tour guide),... More
