Walking Bern's Old Town is not only great because of the shops and window shopping but also because the shops are all located under porticos. Thus, when the late evening Alpine showers struck and we were a few blocks from the hotel we didn't need to break our pace. Protected under the portico...we continued uninterrupted. The scene itself is as... More

Alt Stadt (old town) Bern is a blend of the ancient (for example, Munster cathedral) and the very modern (many shops and restaurants are to be found throughout. Circumscribed by the beautiful river Aare, Alt Stadt Bern includes numerous remarkable places to see, such as the barengraben (live bear pit -- in town!), the most-photographed zeitclocke (a "cukoo clock" far... As some might say perhaps the old town of Bern won't impress you when you stack it up agains other old towns in Switzerland/Europe (it doesn't stand up to someplace like Bruges) but still I was not disappointed. The old clock and the fountains were really the highlight for me.

The Old Town in Bern is charming - cobblestone streets, the Old Clock Tower, beautiful buildings, museums, The Einstein House, delicious restaurants and lots of interesting fountains.

Bern, compared with others enchanted cities in Switzerland is not a must seen place (in my opinion). Same happens with it's old town! Circled by a river, small little bears zoo at the entrance, a tower clock, shops, buses and cars passing through the streets, two churches (one was closed) and old alike buildings, like everywhere. Not charmy or with... More

Grab a walking tour map and head off on foot. (The only way you can see the old town properly anyway.) Remember to walk all the way across the bridge to see the bears - they have some nice wooded areas along the river to walk in. Beware of the trams in the pedestrian areas! Albert Einstein's house is along... More

Nice old town, easy to do on foot. Plenty of green spaces and the river when it gets hot. The rose garden on the hill above the Bear park has a nice place for a drink (or meal) while enjoying the view over the old town and river.

From the giant clock with its hammer striking man, to wandering the streets old town is where its at. Einstein kept an apartment here which is now a museum (as much of a museum as you can fit in an apartment) easy walk to bear pits. Plenty of shopping and eating, stay in the hotels there and you are close... More

We stayed in an apartment in the old town so everything was outside our door. There are cobbled streets lined with shops, restaurants, bars and interesting statues, water fountains and of course the amazing clocks. On Saturdays there is a wonderful market selling cheeses, meats, wines, vegetables and flowers, do not miss the market if you are there on a Saturday.... More
