The view of bern is just gorgeous. There are plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the view. The ride up is free with a swiss pass. It was interesting to see bikers ride the funicular up to ride their bikes down.

One of the must-see spots in Bern if you want to take in a good view - On a clear day you have a great view of the Alps and the Juras. Nice, easy walking up top, so great for anyone with limited mobility as well.

The Gurten park is really close to the city and offers excellent views of it and the mountains. There is a really big green field with farms and cows. You actually won't believe you're in a capital city! I took the train up and descended walking through the trail. Very recommended!

On a rainy day it was still nice to do! I loved the train ride up the mountain, had a moment to see those people on mountain bikes go down the hill. Up the hill there was a tower to go up on (no elevator, just stairs!) and you then had a 360 degree view over the Bern area which... More

We came to Gurten on a very sunny day, so it provided great 360 view to the surrouding Bern area. There were many families that came up to enjoy the park. We did not see any mobs of tour groups, so this must not be a popular attraction with tours - which worked out wonderful for us! Lots of walking... More

We had a great time making our way through the city on a tram that left us close to the cable car... No language issues getting tickets or info and not a scary ride up the hill. We were delighted to sit at the outdoor cafe (self serve cafeteria inside even has decent wine). There is a nice park at... More

I was attracted to Bern because I enjoy strolling through the old town but when we arrived on a Sunday (and also a holiday) practically everything was closed. Sitting at breakfast we had a view up to the hilltop where Gurten is found and I figured there had to be something up there. Sure enough checking tripadvisor this was indeed... More

take the #9 tram to gurtenblad stop and walk up the hill to the furnicular. $10.50 round trip. Very high location with views of Bern from hiking trails and rolling pasture. Playgrounds for kids nice. An expensive restaurant and a cafeteria style spot with good selection. Pick a clear day so you don't waste the trip.

Just a short walk from the old town to the "funicular" to Gurten. From Gurten you'll have a great view over Bern. Gurten is an ideal starting point for exploring the green hills surrounding Bern.
