This should definitely be part of any family's visit to Bern, with tons of green space, fantastic playgrounds, and a cool tower. Plus there's a great cafeteria at the top, so no need to plan ahead for a picnic.

I had a great time coming here because you have some amazing views on a clear day and the 30min walk / hike up the hill is easy enough. At the bottom of the hill there are plenty of shops, plus a nearby supermarket. The public tram service is also incredibly easy to get your head around.

The Gurten is the mountain just to the south of Berne. You can use the funicular for ~10CHF but if you have a Berne bus pass, you can get up the mountain for free. There is a nice little restaurant at the top as well as a play park for kids and a small train. You can walk around the... More

As an American living in Bern without a car, sometimes I just want to get out into nature without a lot of hassle or expense. The Gurten is perfect for this. The base of the big hill (or maybe it's a baby mountain) is easily accessible by tram, and from there you can either take the 30-minute hike up the... More

It is an easy tram ride from Old City Bern (tram 9) and walk up a hill to the tram to bring one up to Gurten. Gurten has open park space, trails for running, or hills for sledding. There were a few dining options (cafeteria like, more up-scale) with tables offering a view of Bern and the Alps. It is... More

Not far away from downtown, you have the opportunity to undertake a short hike around Bern's home mountain. The view to the South is spectacular when the sky is clear. The restaurant is more than ok and when you walk down back to the city using the road, you will come through an idyllic hamlet (Gurtendorf), with beautiful farms/ chalets.

Weren't too sure on what we were in for, going up the Gurten. But wow. You have the greatest view of the city and of the alps. Truly breathtaking. The only thing I regret is not having skis going down the mountain. Instead decided to trek down. Worth the journey!

In the delightful capital of Switzerland its easy to be charmed,,,but take a short tram ride a little way outside the Old Town & then a slight inclined walk transfer to the funicular railway, & go to the top of Mt Gurten--in itself a trip worth taking to look back over Bern-- then you will have had a SWISS mountain... This a small park which is located on top of a hill. It is easy to get there via train. There is a restaurant available which has a buffet. The park is lush green and a peaceful place to visit with family and friends. There is a small toy train ride for kids as well. There is an observation deck... More
