This is a lovely refreshing swim but there are 3 potential problems. First the temperature (check the temperature water displays in the Marzili pool area and make sure it is a temperature you can deal with. Second, there are undertow currents. These seem to be strongest at the sides of the river, but you don't want to stray too far... More

We visited Bern for its UNESCO status of the Old Town and did not know anything about bathing in the Aare river. Then, it was a very hot Sunday afternoon we saw plenty of people swimming along happily in the strong currents of the Aare and thought we' try it out as people really seemed to be enjoying themselves. It... More

I thoroughly enjoyed the swimming baths and went there daily for reading on my iPad while tanning in the sun. I approached the Aare with humility. There are several exits alongside the pool. I swam between the first and last exit, which was quite exhilarating albeit cautious. The water was crisp and refreshing. An absolute must do on any visit... More

I did not try it myself, but it was quite amazing to see people of all ages jump into the wild water (only 12°C) and to see them be taken by the strong and wild streaming water. Next time I'll try it maybe myself.

Switzerland is known for being expencive but many activities can be done for free. My favourite activity in Bern is swimming in the Aare starting from getting off the number 9 tram at Gurtenbahn and walking down the hill untill the river. Nothing is more relaxing than gently floating down to the Mazili on a hot summers day. For the... More

If you are a good swimmer, it's definately the best thing to do in summertime in Berne. It's just brilliant!

...if you haven't been swimming throught it. Enjoy the surprising atmosphere of the summer evening along the river, or decide for a bathing cure during the winter... This river has a role in the living of Bern.

Only for trained swimmers. The Aare can be very dangerous! You can also walk up the path at Marzili and then swimm all the way down to the Marzili.

This is not for the faint-hearted: You have to be a confident swimmer and happy to jump into chilly, fast-going water. But for me, this is a highlight of living in Bern, every summer!
