...if you haven't been swimming throught it. Enjoy the surprising atmosphere of the summer evening along the river, or decide for a bathing cure during the winter... This river has a role in the living of Bern.

Only for trained swimmers. The Aare can be very dangerous! You can also walk up the path at Marzili and then swimm all the way down to the Marzili.

This is not for the faint-hearted: You have to be a confident swimmer and happy to jump into chilly, fast-going water. But for me, this is a highlight of living in Bern, every summer!

Floating down the river Aare seems to be the preferred summer sports in Bern. It offers a beautiful view on the parliament building on top of getting a refreshing bath. But beware of the strong current and dangers (people have lost their lives there). Just ask a local to accompany on your first swim and show you when to steer... More

As one who calls Bern her "adopted home," I was obliged to partake in many a Marzili lounge-about with my Bernese husband. The grassy lawn is a friendly alternative to a stoney beach or one that would deposit uncomfortable loads of sand in one's bathing bottoms. But if you're just passing through Bern in the summer time, you need to... More

Enjoy swimming here, this is the most popular place to locals. There is another bath wirh more nature in walking distance, called Eichholz.

As a swiss-american,I have visited Bern many times.Speaking fluent Bernese german helps. Nowhere in the world is water quality quite like it is in Switzerland. In fact water quality in Lake Geneva has been compared to Evian. That's pretty much the case all over Swiss. There is a fountain next to the bakery(the best in the area). Locals claim it is... More

When you are in Bern you simply have to go for a swim in the Aare. You go to the Marzilibad (where the entrance is free, by the way) and walk up as far as you want to swim back. Then you get over the often cold water, jump in and enjoy your "ride". From nowhere is the view of... More

There is no better place to swim than in the Aare River in Bern. It is clean, cool and fresh. It is fun and afterwards you really fell great. Be aware that you must be a good swimmer!
