It looked like some of the things there could have been quite interesting. However there was no English and the English explanation sheets didn't explain anything or help at all. It was very quiet when I was there and the spaces seemed really big and empty. The objects were nice to look at but that's all I could do so... More

It is a pitty to see such nice artifacts without understanding what they mean. Visitors would enjoy much more if it displays information in English as well.

I was a bit disappointed in the actual displays of this museum. They claim to have the most extensive collection in Europe of Amazonian artifacts, but only have a few dozen on display. Makes me wonder where the rest is. Even their temporary exhibit on Angels was lacking - a few panels of paintings and sketches. Where they are very... More

Basel is lucky enough to have some outstanding museums and this is not one of them. The court yard is lovely but inside is a shameful waste of space. They have marvels that they could show but prefer to exhibit packets of noodles and other mindless cultural ephemera that they mistaken think constitutes a fashionable modern exhibition. There is so... More

The museum is a hodgepodge of artifacts from around the world and lacks an overview. In a city of wonderful museums, one wonders - why this?

Basel's Museum of Ethnology (what an odd word!) is a fine place to visit--even if it were not a stone's throw from the ever-popular Munster. The starkly modern building is home to what appears to be rotating exhibits of masks, fabrics, and weapons, with special emphasis on crafts brought back home to Basel from Oceania, Africa, Ceylon, and pre-Columbian America.... Basel is a great city if one is interested in multi-culture and old-new. The old city invites with its Caffee Houses and Restaurants to observe the business of life. Many different dishes reflect the diversity of the city reaching from Spanish to Korean. The closeness to France and Germany can be felt and tasted. Wine is the word here. Where... More

Building was redone by Herzof & Demeuron. If you like architecture, it's a great find. The museum has a HUGE collection in part due to curator's acquisitions but also because they were donated spectacular collections but shows it parsimoniously. If you do not have to pay extra it's a fine place to go to but if you are paying full... More

Not the common museum. Easy to look around, nice setting and diplays. Nice location on Munster Platz, near the overlook of the Rhein River.
