The museum has beautiful displays, including much of what is left of the original "Totentanz" mural created during the Black Plague. Unfortunately, most of the explanations are given in German only, which limits the appreciation of visitors who do not speak that language.

Great museum and a lot, lot better than you would think. The underground chambers are particularly great as are the weapons. Great morning had in this wonderful building, slap bang in the middle of Basel.

For a town the size of Basel, this was a fantastically laid out museum. I loved the coffee shop just inside. What an incredible array of historical religious relics - and the tapestry collection was mind-boggling! Doesn't take too long to get through the whole thing, and so worth it!

This museum has an outstanding collection of ecclesiastical art as well as historical objects from the Basel region. We could easily have spent a whole day examining their displays (but didn't get there until late afternoon our last day). I would rate it one of the best museums in Europe for those who are interested in European history from medieval... More

This history museum, in a historical church, contains artifacts that revolve around Basel from the Middle Ages till present. When I arrived, I was told the information for the displays was in German and was given a booklet that contained English descriptions for some of the displays, which were numbered. This was helpful. There were many interesting things to see.... More

As much as I wanted to really enjoy this museum it was difficult as all info is in German language. The front desk does have a book you can carry around with English explanations, but it is in some order that is still a lot of flipping of pages to find.. Helpful staff who can answer some questions in English.... More

The main building of the Basel Historical Museum since 1894 is housed in a former church known as the Barfüsserkirche, or litertally “barefoot church.” The Museum stands on the site of an original church dedicated in 1256 and later, a Franciscan monetary. Its name is taken from the monastery of the Franciscan Order Barfüsserkirche was before the great Basel earthquake... More

You can visit the first part of the museum, which is the nave of the old church for free and there is an excellent coffee shop right there, where you can escape the noise and bustle of the busy square outside. The paying part has some wonderful surprizes, the best of which are the tapestries of prototype hippies who displayed... More
