The main building of the Basel Historical Museum since 1894 is housed in a former church known as the Barfüsserkirche, or litertally “barefoot church.” The Museum stands on the site of an original church dedicated in 1256 and later, a Franciscan monetary. Its name is taken from the monastery of the Franciscan Order Barfüsserkirche was before the great Basel earthquake... More

You can visit the first part of the museum, which is the nave of the old church for free and there is an excellent coffee shop right there, where you can escape the noise and bustle of the busy square outside. The paying part has some wonderful surprizes, the best of which are the tapestries of prototype hippies who displayed... More

Despite the comments in previous reviews about grumpy staff and an incoherent narrative, this is one of the best museums I've visited (and I've visited quite a few!). Maybe my experience was helped by the fact that I'm a Reformation historian, and I read German, but I thought the collection was very well interpreted. For example, there was an excellent... More

There are truly some amazing things to see in there, but no coherent narrative. Just a bunch of displays. The English commentary is lacking, and if you need more information, they give you a catalog book. An audio guide could have been a nicer option. Staff very friendly.

We waited for the Museum to open, and were probably the first to enter. The receptionist was counting the money and at no time acknowledged that we were there. When we asked to pay in Euro and Swiss franc, she was most rude and unhelpful. Maybe it was a language thing, but in her position at a tourist attraction, a... More

What a wonderful use of a church!! The museum is full of artifacts of many eras and kinds. I LOVED the tapestries and they are so well preserved!!! So much to see...we spent over three hours here.

The museum is located in the city center in an old church. you have plenty of old items, from roman civilization with a very nice fibulae collection, passing by middle age and a lot of coins to look at. the insider tip is: there is a free entrance from 4pm to 5pm (museum closes at 5pm) which doesn't allow you... The exhibits are exquisitely done--lighting, layout, materials. The former church is a perfect space for this historical museum. If they would provide english descriptions it would rate 5 stars, but here is only the occasional English translation in a few of the room plaques. Still worth a visit.
