Rathaus has the dual meaning in Basel of townhall and red house and both apply. When I visited the council chambers weren't open so this review only applies to the exterior. The town hall is set on the market place and there is a bustling market on a Saturday. The exterior is very highly decorated both on the facade and... More

Being Easter weekend, this was a quiet place to visit, but we loved being able to look in the council chambers and visit the public areas. Very interesting history of how the building was constructed over the years.

This place is completely amazing, I wasn't planning on stopping in Basel while travelling through Europe so I knew little pf the city. Walking down the street with my friends and popped in. Unbelievable. Beautiful art and architecture very uncrowded on a Sunday afternoon. Right in the old town. Definitely worth a visit

A lovely building with a fantastic facade. Just through the iron gates are superb paintings on the walls. As far as I know, that's as far as you can go.

Rathaus means City Hall in german. It is the site of the government of Basel-City canton and of the Basel city administration. The joke is that when the canton council ordered this palace to be built, the architect was a bit hard on the ear, and he delivered a... Fantastic bit of architecture and the walls inside are worn checking out, stunning images. You cannot go into any of the rooms, just the front courtyard type area. Amazing what they used to build without modern engineering.

It's one of those buildings that make you say oh wow that's so cool😄Very striking building, as for its color choice, as for its decorations, both outside and inside. You can't miss it when downtown!

Beautiful town hall in the centre of Basel. It is worth going inside to look at the fascinating 16th century biblical artwork adorning the walls inside. It has interesting statues also. Will need around 10 mins max to look around.

Amazing painted walls inside and out. Red hue with very large murals - I haven't seen this sort of decoration before. Ask the concierge to let you up onto the 3rd floor so you can see the roof too. Also visit the market in front of the building.

Really oriental - looking building in the centre of the old city with a lovely market outside it. Gorgeous. Must-see whilst sipping a coffee from one of the market vendors. Just magical.
