I visited the basilica in Oct, 2008. I have been there several times in the last 15 years. There is always something new to see because you can't take it all in with just one visit. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1997, the frescoes have been completely restored in the church of St. Francis. They are outstanding and may be the best you'll see in Italy.
