Much has already been written about this Basilica designed and built soon after St. Francis died. Plan to spend some time standing before the magnificent Giotto frescoes, and slowly, slowly pay your respects to the saint's tomb deep underground where he is safely buried in the living rock within the mountain. Splendid art - it is wonderfully quiet in January which means you can enjoy it at leisure and stop to say your prayers! More

Very difficult to film or take pictures (you need a 007 camera since it is vorbidden), the place is simply amazing, if you know San Francesco's story you really feel that you are part of it there More

Stunning! Visit in the afternoon to make the most of the wonderful sunsets. I have visited on 4 occasions all different times of the year and each time it moved me. Can get busy on public holidays and weekends. More

If you go sign up for a guided tour, there are actually two Basilica's; one over the other with a small church under both. The tours are free, they ask for a donation so give them what you would pay for any other tour. Its a great tour about 1.25 hours, offered in several languages. More

The Basilica is very impressive from many standpoints. It is beautiful all by itself and the architecture is impressive. It is a moving experience from a religious stand point. If you are in Umbria, make the time to go to Assisi. You will not be disppointed. More

Clearly this is a popular location with Catholics and other tourists, and beyond the visit to the Basilica the hilltop location of the village and surrounding vistas are breath-taking. But let's start with arriving. - Roadway signs are clear and the route is easy to follow - There is a large underground parking garage; you pay be the 1/2 hour... More
