Santa Chiara Church is dedicated to Saint Clare of Assisi, founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, now known as the Order of Saint Clare. She is remembered as Francis’ most faithful follower. After construction of this church began in 1257, Clare's remains were transferred from the Chapel of San Giorgio to the Basilica in 1260, where they were buried... More

This is a beautiful church, not quite as nice as the Basilica of San Francesco, but a very close second. And one of the major churches to see in Assisi. This is the first major church you see when you come into the town from the parking garage. So a good place to start and familiarize yourself with all Assisi... More

Santa Chiara was a disciple of Saint Francis and this church is dedicated to her. The Poor Clare's still own the ancient olive groves next to the church. It sits in a lovely piazza.

Another church not as ornate as the basilica. There is a lovely square outside with great views there was a group of musicians playing when we were there!

We toured here after seeing the Basilica of St Francis so this may not be a fair comparison. Nice small piazza in front and good for watching people. Inside is a almost typical Cathedral of this era. The San Damiano cross on the altar is quite fascinating and adds for a quiet respectful time.

The Church of St Clare is lovely... form the San Damiano cross, the quiet prayerful atmosphere to the tomb of St Clare- it was a powerful experience,

Our tour guide answered many questions and was patient and friendly. The church has been kept just as it was, frescoes were removed during a time of illness when the church was used as an infirmary bring home how old the church is. Seeing the cross of San Damiano and the incorrupt St. Clare and her belongings was a definite... More

Great for people watching. Hang out, have an espresso, relax. Take in the shops in the surrounding area.

We saw a wonderful sunset in the "terraza" in front of the church. Valley view is very nice. Chiara crypt is inside the lovely church.

The interior of this basilica is rather sober but therefore not less impressive. The crucifix of San Damiano is a must see if you're inspired by the story of Saint Francis.
