Touching views on the exterior. Incredibly raw interior with game of light and shade. You can feel the history looking at you. Great photo shooting spot (of course not during the bus tourists flowing in and out and around). More

We visited this tranquil little abbey on a sunny afternoon. The church was very interesting and there was an underground passage where relics of Saints are placed during religious festivities. It is certainly worth a visit if you are interested in monasteries. More

We went to Sant'Antimo on a Saturday morning. The abbey is gorgeous, set in the middle of a beautiful tuscan countryside. But don't miss the 9.15 mass if you have a bit of religious feeling, as it is in gregorian style, that meaning sung by the monks. Just 5 people attending that february morning but worth that whole day. A... More

Sant'Antimo is a 9th century Romanesque church and monastery built by Charlemagne. The architecture is exceptional. It sits elegantly in a field in the Tuscan countryside outside of Montalcino. (It is possible to walk there from Montalcino via a very nice trail through the countryside, all downhill, in about two hours, which I recommend doing if you have time. Unless... More

Once the second most powerful Abbey in Tuscany, Sant'Antimo abbey underwent a long spell od decadence during which the abbey palace was almost entirely destroyed, but the church was almost completely saved from rebuilding works so the present state is amazingly close to the great times of the Abbey; the magnificent building was not yet finished when decadence hit; the... The 12 kilomeeter hike down from or up to Montalcino after hearing the Gregorian chants at Sant'Antimo is well worth taking tthe time to ascertain the exact route (preferably before you go.) We walked up, on rocky and narrow paths, past vineyards, old campfires and wineries. It was November, and a young man who speaks fluent English was harvesting olives,... More

Besides the peaceful and beautiful environs mentioned by other reviewers, I wld like to mention the bookshop which is located a short distance away. It has a selection of local products and most importantly, amazing toilets. I was so impressed by the toilets that I spent twice as much at the bookshop as I might have otherwise :) More
