Lucca has done a wonderful job preserving the walls, made the top a walking/bicycling path. I understand they drove cars on the wall until a few years ago. Pack a lunch, take your time, and enjoy the views!

It is very easy to walk or ride a bike on the wide ramparts around Lucca. Lots of people, including groups of school children and mothers with strollers meander on the walls. You can easily get off and go into the city to visit sites at various points.

A great way to spend a pleasant afternoon! We rented bikes at Ciccli Rai, where the service was friendly and helpful. Easy, flat ride with no automobiles, but lots of walkers and other bicyclists that you sometimes need to dodge.

We took a leisurely walk all the way around the city. The front desk staff said it was 2.3 km. Lots of people out joggin, walking, bicycling. It was a very pleasant way to see the entire city.

Hire a bike, walk, run or do all three - but you must walk the walls of Lucca - try a Sunday when all the locals are out with their families - parades, performers, stalls, cafes, gardens - it is wonderful hady mixture of delightful experiences.
