Some parts of this a closed off for repairs, but you still get a feel for the chirch and what it was used for. There are examples of the the very fine reliquaries and other relgious items, on which no money was spared. The powerful Medici used churches as a way of showing that their rule was endorsed by the... More

This Trip Advisor webpage is an error as the main webpage for the same attraction exists - it's title is 'Basilica di San Lorenzo'. ---- The church of San Lorenzo (Basilica di San Lorenzo) is my '6th place' attraction in Florence. Boy is the facade of this church ugly ! BUT don't let that deter you as whilst that initial... More

San Lorenzo has it all. This was the first Renaissance church. Brunelleschi built it in the first flowering of Florentine humanism. Unlike the Duomo, Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce, etc., San Lorenzo was not built with the idea of overwhelming you with the glory of God. It is designed to inspire you with the glory of God's creature, man. The... More

I visited here in April 2008 and was very disappointed by the amount of areas that were closed off to the public. I guess I still would have wanted to see the inside of the church anyway (who knows when I'll ever be back to Florence), but the Laurentian Library was closed as well as other areas, for renovation/restoration. The... More

Old, old church. Photos are not allowed inside. Construction began in the 1390s. Contains Brunelleschi's Old Sacristy which has some beautiful shades of blue still vivid in it. Also has several early Renaissance paintings as well as pulpits from 1460 by Donatello. The church inside is not overly ornate which I found very pleasing. Has a dome. Large columns and... More

The Medici family were for over a hundred years the leaders of Florence, and they lavished their money on this, their parish church. The facade is unfinished (Michelangelo drew up plans to decorate it, but never got the chance) but inside it is lavishly decorated. The main area of the church has an entrance fee of 2.50 euros, for which... More

Visited Florence June 21-24, 2005. Extremely impressive dome which is a must see. Unfortunately, restoration limited our enjoyment. Unexpected entrance fee to a church but well worth it. More
