Another really enjoyable day. Get your tickets online before you go because the queues are very long for tickets on the day.

Easily able to spend a whole day in this museum. Lucky we where there in off season of November - not so many people. This place certainly ticked the bucket list for me. Florence as a whole is an adventure not to be missed, savour every minute.

Don't be misled by the name of this museum - "opera" means "works" in Italian, and from the Middle Ages on, this was the Duomo's Works Office. It has stored collections of architectural ornaments removed during previous renovation and design changes, and one of Michelangelo's three "Pieta's". This one was intended for Michelangelo's own tomb, but he left it unfinished... More

This is actually my favorite museum in Florence. The collection is wonderful and I especially like the remnants of the contest for finishing the dome and the bronze doors. Here you will get to see the actual baptistry doors, which are incredible. Be sure to learn the history behind the competitions. Very interesting.

Had a great experience last year -- the original frames of the Baptistery doors are there and for that alone the museo is worthy of a visit. Unfortunately closed until the Fall.

Staying in Duomo

Neighborhood Profile
Duomo
Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.
