We stayed in Ortigia in October 2007. The place is charming but, as has been said, it was 'still under construction' when we were there, many of the buildings shrouded in scaffolding for renovation. English was no problem but a few words of Italian always goes down well, and earns you a smile and a warm welcome from the local... more

If you're looking for entertainment, a kids club or a package holiday this is not the place for you! We stayed in an apartment in Ortigia this year in September and we really loved it. Ortigia is a small community which sits as an island next to Siracusa. It's extremely traditional with beautiful architecture and some really gorgeous restaurants. The... more

We managed to return after some time, in March 06 - yes, it is under construction! Wow, they are doing a lot of work. I thought there was a city-wide program under way, but was informed that was not the case. The place just needs lots of work. We walked in the old Greek ghetto, along Via della Giudecca. That... more

Ortigia is indeed lovely and a very picturesque place to book a place while visiting Syracuse. However, the traveller should be warned that almost the whole site is under construction and not to be upset with not being able to visit the major art gallery (closed) and the cathedral is totally under scaffolding. Many of the buildings are being restored.... more

My wife and I stayed on Ortygia for 3 days this past October and loved it. We rented an apartment near the Piazza Duomo and thus could enjoy the sights and sounds of the island up close. Although the facade of the main cathedral is in scaffolding right now, the piazza is lovely, especially in the evening. Some highlights: (1)... more

We stayed only one night, arriving around noon we took the 1 euro boat ride to the beach then returned to our hotel to walk the island. The esplanade is a lovely start, plenty views right on the seafront, many people out walking, children playing, everyone in good spirits. There are little panaterias, nuts and candies, touristy eateries, kiddie rides,... more

Ortygia, or Ortigia, is the "old part" of the town of Syracuse, Italy. It's the original city, and if you like to get lost in alleyways and skinny streets, I don't think you'll find a better place in Italy. Nothing compares to this unique maze of quaint and authentic Sicilian life. By authentic, I mean you will find that many... more
