I must admit to be nervous on how I would react to a whole underground area full of bodies(skeletons really) hanging from walls but found it quite fascinating and even respectful & peaceful. The dead are dressed in their Sunday best and are generally arranged in categories i.e. priests, nobles, soldiers, virgins etc..The vast majority of the bodies are from the mid 19th century... more

So this is basically the only reason we came all the way down to Palermo (which to me, was not the funnest place... kinda grimy) but I'd say it was worth it. Of course, this place is not for everyone. If you're faint of heart or easily squeamish, then you should pass, but if you like something strange you've never... more

I have traveled the world and experienced many sides of life that was given to me. In all my travels I have never been given an experience like the Catacombs of Capuchins. It makes you really think what these people were about. It gave me a real respect for them and all the people that worked to preserve their past.... more

This is somewhere I wouldnt take someone who sufferes from nightmares! But do go if you like something fascinating, or different, or morbid. It's something I didn't expect to enjoy so much. It's full of 8,000 fully / semi rotted dead bodies. I have never ever seen anything like it. Its about 1.50 euro to get in. I didnt get... more

This made me a bit squeemish. I am glad that I saw this, as it iwas a once in a lifetime sight, but I could only stomach a few minutes. Once I saw the babies I had to get out of there. I would suggest seeing it, but it is an attraction that you don't need more than about an... more

Visiting the Catacombs was the main reason I planned my trip to Palermo. The Catacombs are located in Piazza Cappuchin, and not Via Cappuchin as quoted in guide books. They are easily walkable from Piazza Indipendenza: follow Via Cappuchin right to the traffic lights, then turn right and they are at the end of the cul-de-sac. The entrance is on... more

Considering the American fascination with avoiding the concept of death and aging at all possible cost, the Capuchin Catacombs are a fascinating glimpse into a truly alternative cultural stance on death and dying. The catacombs are lined with hanging and reclining bodies, which, due to the atmosphere within the catacombs, are remarkably well-preserved. Clothing, flowers, even hair and eyelashes remain... more
