We used the ferry service to travel from Messina to Calabria and it was very good, it is a very busy service as it is popular with both locals and the tourists. We had no complaints at all.

20 min hydrofoil over to the mainland of Italy- very easy. Walking distance to the train station. Reggio di Calabria is worth a visit with a lovely beach, shopping and interesting sites.

We thought at first to take the train from Rome but that means we would be on the train at least 8 hours and would arrive in Milazzo around 6pm and take the hydrofoil at 7pm if the trains were on time....
