The bustling Piazza Duomo surrounds the Fontana dell'Elefante, something of a symbol of Catania, which features an elephant carved out of lava bearing an Egyptian obelisk surmounted by a globe. One side of the square is dominated by the cathedral, another by the town hall. A number of cafes face the cathedral and provide opportunities for leisurely people-watching. The passage... More

A place of extraordinary beauty. Most of the material it is made from the lava of Etna. A beautiful statue of the symbol of the city stands in the middle of the square. The elephant is also made from lava. Near the Church, very beautiful. At night the area looks very nice, thanks to the illuminated. I am impressed:)

We had an interesting walk through Catania, starting at the market. On street parking was reasonable priced, if a little confusing. We went on market day and there were plenty of bargains to be had in clothing, shoes, household goods etc. and interesting food produce on sale. The market was full of hustle and bustle and locals. The architecture of... More

Very scenic. Situated in large square. Lots of pedestrians. The Piazza Duomo is not always open. Check times!

Well, I know many places have siesta but this is closed from 12 - 16, which reflects the entire city. We hopped on a 40 min train tour instead.

As you walk down the long street towards the Piazza Duomo, there is a feeling of darkness and gloom, probably due to the run down properties, stray dogs and that most of the buildings are still black from the ground to about waist high, remnant of the volcano eruption in bygone days. Then you come to the Piazza Duomo and... More

It's hard to imagine anyone visiting Catania not ending up in this square at some point. It is a one end of Via Etnea the main shopping street, is in front of the Duomo and has nice fountains and the elephant monument which is the city symbol. It is also adjacent to the vibrant fish and food markets. Lots of... More

Beautiful baroque square speaking lots of history. Intriguing baroque Architecture mixing Sicilian style with the use of lava stone from the Aetna Vulcano. Nicely illuminated at night. Compulsory!
